Yesterday dad was able to take 20 steps holding onto the hall railing at the rehab center. That was the first time he has walked, not in the bars, and used only his left hand (the one that is not broken). That was great news.
Poor Alex went to his doctor yesterday without his new brace because they refused to make it unless they knew for sure they would be paid. Well, they called last week and said they would make it but the problem was that Alex had been out of a cast so long his hand had already started to bend again. Went to see his doctor yesterday and I was right, too bent for a brace so we have another cast. Alex, to say the least, was not happy at all.
Dr. Helmy called the brace place and let them have it and told them they were looking for a new place to refer patients but if they are treated like we were, they won't use them. I tried to explain to them that he could not be out of a brace and cast that long because his hand would start to bend but that didn't make a difference. They wanted their money first, then take care of the patient. Braces are now $800 a piece and with no money coming in, I could not say I would pay it if Medicaid would not. So we got nothing and now he has a new blue cast for probably a month or so.
Also dad has gained 1 pound, he now is up to 115 lbs. He has asked mom and me and Danny and Alex to bring him McDonald french fries whenever we come to see him and he will eat them and hopefully that will help him gain weight. He lost 20 lbs. since going into rehab because no one ever noticed he ate only sandwitches because he could not cut up any meat with one hand. Until we had our meeting with them, they never noticed. Showed us just what kind of care he was getting.
