  • Need Some Help From Long-time Speedworld Fans/drivers

Couple of things that are driving me crazy... Usually I have a pretty good memory but I've got a couple I just have complete brain fade on...
Back in the early 80's a driver hit the pit divider head-on at Speedworld... The engine flew out of the car and landed in the infield just off turn three...
The driver received a busted leg I think... He was from the Vero/Ft. Pierce area... Car was a school bus yellow #22 or 23, a 1966-67 Chevelle... Just cannot remember his name... I know he raced a lot along the east coast from NSS to West Palm...
Also, there was a husband & wife team out of Brevard County who ran Chrysler Imperials in the Bomber class back when I first started working at Speedworld... I for the life of me can't remember their names... can anybody help???

      Lee Faulk....maybe?

Lee Faulk told me a story simular to that one. He said that L.W."Poncho"Funk built him a new car years ago, and when it was still quit new he hit the pit divider and destroyed the car. Lee showed me a pitcure of the car on its first night out. It was a '64-'65 Chevelle body that I belive was yellow with red accents and number on it. Seems like it was #23. If this is correct I bet cha Buzzy Berry would know for sure. Oh yeah I remember for sure he said that the motor ended up in turn three.

Ron says that's Ronnie Strickland you're thinking of. Racing didn't get him but cancer did some years ago.

Thanks Todd... I was sure Ron would remember... That was a nasty crash... After 33 years there is no more divider there... It was this that got OSW named as one of the 10 most dangerous short tracks in America in an article in Circle Track Magazine...
