  • Some More Old Memories

    1) Frank Riddle with car owner Willard "Round Daddy" Smith at Golden Gate either 1967 or 68...
    2) Aftermath of the big Pete Folse Modified crash (1968) at Golden Gate... He got banged up pretty bad but the only significant injury was some broken ribs.
    3) Jimmy Capps at Jacksonville 1n 1968
    4) Before there was Butch, Barbara or Chad Pierce, there was Kip Pierce... He is best remembered for his #1 Toonerville Trolley but here he is at Sunshine Speedway in 1961 in the sharp D-6 Sedan...

Jimmy Lee Capps and the old Jax Speedway on Lennox

A couple of time a mounth a bruch of us from Sanford would go to Jax on Saturday nights and watch Jimmy Lee, Eddie Mac, Frank Brantley, and the rest of the regulars put on a hellof a show. Every now and then Tiny Lund and "Tiger" Tom Pistone would show up and the fur would fly. We would see great racing and get out of there just a little after 10PM. We would listen to the "Grand Ole Opry" on the way back to Sanford. Man life was alot simpler back in the day!

Back in the mid 70's I was stationed at Homestead AFB... If the Chief would let me off early on Friday, I'd drive up to Speedworld and catch the Friday show then crash at my parents' house... Sat. morning I'd head over to Bob Luscomb's shop and hang out until we loaded up and went to Golden Gate... Have dinner with my folks on Sunday then head back down south around sunset just as the out-of-town radio signals would start coming in... Would listen to "Rockin' Ray" and his oldies show on WBT out of Charlotte on my way back to the base...

Hey Dave, Homestead, now thats a thing of the past. I can remember landing there a few times when I was in the Air Force and then I remember when a hurricane, I think it was Betsey in 1965, went thru there. I was working with FPL then and went down there to help repair the storm damage.
We drove up to the entrance to the base and the pole line for about 1/2 mile or more was just laying on the ground. I was on a service truck, so couldn't do any thing to fix it. You said Cheif. Were you in the navy and part of a VR squadron? I flew with some of those guys out of Mcquire AFB in Jersey. I never could understand why they didn't rebuild Homstead. Was it Andrew that destroyed most of the Base. Homestead always seemed to be an important base, being the southernmost AFB. The only thing south of that is a naval station in Key West I think. Bob........

Our office on the flightline was headed up by a really good old Chief Master Sgt., Chief Seymour was his name... Rode a really nice blue and white Harley Electra Glide... We had F-4D's at the time... Andrew wiped out alot... The base, the apartment building I lived at in Perrine, my wife's house in Cutler Ridge where she grew up and the church we were married in... Haven't been down in that area since 1987... don't speak the language...

I know what you mean about the languge, me neither. I don't think I have been down there since late 60's on early 70's. My wifes cousin was stationed there and we went to see him. I haven't lost any thing there thats for sure. My Dad used to live in Davy, along with my aunt and uncle. My Dad passed and my aunt moved to Atlanta. Did I understand that you rode a harley or the Chief? Bob......
