After the annual indoor Series races in
Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mel Kenyon was known as "Mr. Midget", and drove 6 decades. He is 76 years old, raced in the Indy 500 eight times, and won a record 7 USAC National Crowns. He drove the usual yellow #61, and won 382 midget and modified races.
He wrote a book, "Burned to Life" after losing most of his left hand in a fiery accident at Langhorne, Pa in 1965--and after that fitted witha special glove with a socket, to grasp a mounted ball on his race car streering wheels. I remember watching him all the time in the midwest circuits, and he would come to our church camps, youth groups, and Masonic Lodges for speaking engagements. Heck of nice guy, and a racing record to boot.
You never know, he might do a Mark Martin thing, and un-retire if he still has the racing fever.
