Just found out that Gene Vitiello passed away on December 9th... Gene was a great competitor with DAARA and came back to race while battling cancer... One of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet...

I am so sorry to hear this Dave. I have known Gene for many years, since he came to Florida. He loved racing and this last year he showed it with his DAARA car. He and Billy Bellflower would be at most every race and you couldn't find a nicer guy than Gene. He always had a smile on his face and always gave me a huge hug when he saw me and if I was by chance buying something to eat, he never let me pay for it, he would.
To Gene's wife, my prayers are with you and my thoughts and love. Gene was a good man and he will be missed. If there is anything that you need, please don't hesitate to tell me.

Gene has been a supporter of the Modified Reunion as well. I couldn't agree more that he was a very nice person, and will be sorely missed.
I saw a few of the DAARA guys at the truckers race, who said that they had just come from visiting him. They were very depressed and sad, knowing that Gene was close to being gone. Looking at the date here, it may have even been the same day.
I will make sure that we have a moment of silence and rememberance at this years Reunion, and will ask the NSS staff and Mark Keeler if he would do the same during the parade laps for the Vintage Cars.
We'll miss you Gene!

That would be very nice Jerry if you do that and I am sure Gene would think so also. Even when he was fighting cancer, he did not let it get him down especially that smile of his. I met him when he came to the salvage yard where I worked many years ago looking for parts. He was a true gentlemen and a good friend. I am just so sorry that we have lost him but I know that he will watch over us and take care of us.
