  • Truckers 200

Edition 4 of the Charity Truckers 200 is in the books. I took my 3 boys to it today, and we had a really good time. We got all that was promised, and yet I am a little frustrated. Not with the event quality, but with the fact that the charity race has the potential to grow so much, yet after 4 years has not fully taken off and blossomed like it could.

Now this is just my opinion as a spectator. I am sure it was successful and raised some money for the three struggling families that benefited from this years race. Thanks to some generous sponsors, and to the combined efforts of so many, I hope they came out well ahead. The problem is that I like the event and want to see it explode in popularity. Don't ask me how to pull that off; there was certainly lots of effort put in by Rick and his team.

The last minute change in schedule due to the rain didn't help the crowd turn-out, yet it was absolutely the right thing to do. Without the change, one night would have been rained out, and the other would have run in the cold. Maybe schedule everything for Sunday afternoon next year. I liked the daytime format. For one thing, my kids lasted to the end.

Aaron's Rentals supplied one of those arena mascots, and I have to tip my hat to who ever was inside that costume. That person really knows how to entertain a crowd, especially the kids. My little sons loved the "Lucky Dog." He or she didn't just blow kisses like the characters at Disney; this damn dog stole my food, pretended to bonk the kids heads together, danced with them and carried on all day. Thanks Aaron's! My little guys had a blast.

I had a little anti-karma moment today. A few months ago, I was critical of one of the truck drivers in todays race. I watched him at his home track, and commented on how he was the biggest hell-raising, trouble-making, fight starting redneck in the whole place. So today, all the drivers handed out a stuffed toy to a kid, and naturally, this driver walked to the fence and gave his toy to my son. It was a good day to not be wearing a "boneman" shirt!

The command to fire engines was given by one of the family members who benefitted from the race. He is a 12 year old boy who recently had a cancerous tumor removed from his eye and brain. As I sat there with my 3 healthy sons, I have to admit it was a touching moment. Who could understand what that boy went through, and not be moved by the enthusiasm in his voice today?

Warmest congratulations to Rick, his army of volunteers, and to all that helped out with the Charity Truckers 200. On to 2010!

Agree 100% with everything above, even if this was my first ever Charity Truckers event. As someone who works in the non-profit world, and who's had to make decisions like the one Rick had to make about the rain-out for events that had (in one case) over 1/3rd of our annual budget riding on the outcome, he made absolutely the right call in moving the races. Being in that situation is not something I would ever wish on anyone!

The family-friendly nature of the event is definitely the angle to push with this as there were lots of kids there in the crowds and they all seemed to benefit greatly from the afternoon racing today. Seemed to me that the main crowd was made up of families and people supporting specific racers, so maybe next year repeating some of the 'Driver Promotion' activities could help bring in more people, while also pushing all the stuff the kids love - the autograph session, drivers coming into the stands to meet the fans, even bringing the bus rides around the track from Crash-A-Rama? And if it's the last racing of the year then maybe some oddball races here and there to make it more of a carnival atmosphere? Would have been a great night to have the strictly stocks race the wrong way around the track, just to make it a bit different for spectators.

Also have to tip my hat to the Aarons mascot, who did a great job, was tireless in coming around the stands all afternoon, and pitched his interactions absolutely perfectly for the crowd this attracted.

Some other things I loved this weekend included having the Champ Karts racing to make it a bit different, having the different announcers across the weekend - Dave W was great today, and the banter between Joe and Mark last night really made the cold evening fly by, so well done to all three of you! - and having some different cars out there to the usual ones that race at Orlando.

Great work by Rick and all the volunteers today. As Rex says, it was incredibly moving to hear the young lad starting the cars up, but also to hear the passion in Rick's voice as he spoke before the races. Well done to everyone in pulling this off and I hope it made as much money as possible for the families it was supporting. Let's hope next year sees it move on and up to the next level, and naturally if there's anything I can do to help then don't hesitate to let me know! Put me down for a lap sponsorship now, in fact...

I am so happy to hear that you and your sons enjoyed today's event Rex and everyone had a good time. I really wanted to be there and write the events but it would just not have been right for me to leave dad right now and mom. Dad came thru surgery fine, no vent, and a rod in his broken hip. They x-rayed his broken arm while in recovery so it would not hurt him so much but still dont' know yet if they have to do surgery on it or not from them moving him so much. He was not suppose to move that arm at all and he has been moved alot especially when they sent him to rehab for the 8 hours and then back to the hospital.

But I have thanked God over and over again for taking care of him and I am so grateful right now you would not believe. Hopefully he will be home for Christmas but if not, Christmas will go to him.

You will like this Rex, my brother took a bunch of the DVDs, a few of the books and dad gave them out to the nurses who took care of him so they now all know who Patrick D. Smith is. I told them, they have to go on his causeway to get back and forth to work so they better be good to him.

Anyway, I am very happy for Rick and hope he was able to raise some money for the families. And next year, God willing, I will be there to write.

Jane, I gave Andy S. a copy of "A Land Remembered" today. Not only is it one of my "top 5" favorite books, but he is in the history business and will want to understand Florida's Cracker culture and settlement period. Your dads book is the best one out there, IMHO.

It sounds like he has a long journey back, but I am so pleased that he is started on that path.

I was with the champ kart group also, and wanted to say what an awesome facility Orlando Speedworld is! Nice, clean place, with a wide smooth track. And the track staff were very friendly, starting with Rick Bristol, who personally greeted my group at the gate on Saturday morning when we pulled up (he was relieving his staff, and checking for armbands I think). Thanks very much to the track for including the champ karts on the schedule.

When I was leaving, it appeared that the tech officials were pulling the engine out of the winner's truck, Tyler Laing. Is that typical for a Charity Truckers race? Does anyone know if he was found to be legal?

See the thread 'NSS Truck Race' for the ongoing politics at the tracks that is probably the cause of this. Seems it's still a prickly issue for plenty of people. They were teching cars throughout the weekend it seemed, not just the trucks, but that division is still something of a hot potato right now.

Great to see the Champ Karts out there - never seen them before but even their heat races added excitement to the show!

Ok... Now since I wasn't able to get there due to personal obligations... I know Andy isn't doing the write up and Jane isn't due to her Father's difficulties... So is there anyway that we who weren't there able to get the starting lineups, the finishing lineups of the races this weekend and so on and so on... I truly hope everyone had a great time, my sincerest to all as I was unable to make it this weekend to enjoy everybody and the races...

I thoroughly enjoyed myself out there yesterday. I really like the Sunday afternoon format, and feel it should be scheduled that way for next year.

My first time of seeing Champ Carts, and I have to say, it was the race of the day. It looked like a mini-Talladega, with the different packs drafting off of each other, and the winner being in doubt right up to the line. Best thing OSW could do, is drop those damned Bandaleros (3 came... 2 finished from what I was told), and add these Champ Carts on for an occasional show. They were actually FUN to watch!

The Truck race was also a good one. After the first 3 years, there was a grand total of ONE pass for the lead. This year was much more competetive. I'm not much of a Truck fan, but each of the last 2 have made me want to come back... I will be there again in 2010.

One last thing... I don't know what happened with the web-site (or maybe it was the people reading it), but around dark, 2 seperate carloads showed up, and BOTH groups said the web-site told them the event changed from Saturday to Sunday, but both said the starting time listed was 7:00. They were very disappointed, as one vanload had a whole bunch of kids in the back looking VERY disappointed. It's too bad these kids had to miss the event.

Other than that, very good day at OSW and congrats to all who helped pull it off.

P.S. - Still wondering if Laing passed Tech... he was obviously much faster than the rest of the field.
