IO just ran across this. First I heard of it. Did I just miss it? Bob.....

    FABRIZIO, The Tampa Tribune

    Published: October 12, 2007

Zephyrhills' David Reutimann has agreed to a new contract with Michael Waltrip Racing that will again allow him to compete full time in both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series, although he'll be in a different Cup car after the first part of the year.

Reutimann confirmed Thursday that he'll move from the No. 00 Toyota into the UPS-sponsored No. 44 Toyota after the first five races, replacing 1999 Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett, who is cutting back to a limited schedule. Jarrett, 50, will run the first five races and the Nextel All-Star Challenge.

The moves will be announced today in a MWR news conference in which the organization reportedly also will announce it is following the lead of several other teams and partnering with an investor.

'I'm pretty happy all the way around,' Reutimann said. 'The cars have been good, the guys are doing a good job. They made me an offer I think was fair, so we're ready to go.'

Reutimann has had a respectable rookie season driving for a new team and a manufacturer competed in its first season in Nextel Cup and the Busch Series. He has outqualified his teammates, Jarrett and team owner Michael Waltrip, and he ranks higher than either in the standings, although none of the three are in the top 35 in the owners standings.

In the Busch Series, where he'll return next year in the No. 99 Toyota, Reutimann is second in the points to Carl Edwards with four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes.

Because Jarrett will start the Nextel Cup season with six former champions provisionals, he is assured of starting all five of his points races, and he may be able to get the No. 44 team into the top 35 in the owners standings. That would allow Reutimann to take over with a guaranteed starting berth.

'I would definitely think so,' Reutimann said. 'I'm going to be in the No. 00 car the first part of the year, so hopefully we can get that one in the top 35, too. Hopefully we can all three be there.'

Reutimann said he didn't know what will happen to the No. 00 team after he moves over but that his understanding was that Waltrip plans to continue running three cars. He said he expects his crew chief, Frank Kerr, and crew will move intact to the No. 44, but doesn't know for certain that it will work that way.

The Reutimann family has a history with the No. 00 that goes back decades. It was David's number while he was coming up through the ranks. But it now appears unlikely he'll be able to keep it.

'I'd love to keep it because it's my number, but I'm pretty sure the UPS car will be a No. 44,' he said. 'UPS has a done a lot of marketing around that number, and I would think they'll want to keep going in that direction.'

The switch will put Reutimann with one of NASCAR's best-known sponsors. UPS' extensive promotion has included its 'Race the Truck' TV commercials in which Jarrett eventually got to drive a souped-up brown delivery truck.

'I've just talked to UPS briefly,' Reutimann said. 'I'm sure D.J. is going to still be a pretty integral part of the whole operation. He'll still be their driver for the first part of the season, and I'm sure he'll remain a spokesperson and be involved. They haven't talked to me about commercials or anything like that.'

That is fairly old news. Here's something much more recent.

Ryan Pemberton is the crew chief for David Reutimann, who will race the #00 Aaron’s Toyota Camry for five races before switching to the driver of the #44 UPS team. Pemberton and Reutimann will remain together through the transition.

Robby Gordon Motorsports has named Frank Kerr to be crew chief for Robby Gordon's #7 Sprint Cup team in 2008. Kerr recently left Michael Waltrip Racing. He was crew chief for Reutimann this past year.

I think this will work out well for David. Hope so anyway.

Don't get me wrong here, because I really like David and the entire Reutimann family... there is none better.

But I hate the way Nascar allows the jumbling of points, provisionals, owners points, past champions, top-35 in points, etc....

Mark my words. In less than 10 years, it will be set up just like Formula-One, where there are 11 teams, with 2 drivers on each team. Nobody else gets in, no matter what. Nascar will probably be 11 teams with 4 each.

I'm glad David will still be involved, but he should have to RACE his way in every week, and so should everyone else. Politics suck!

Jarrett, Elliott and the Labonte's are worth more now than they were when they WERE champions! Just think what would happen if James Hylton had won a championship in his day (I think he finished 2nd 4 times). You'd have a 73 year old guy with a guaranteed spot in the field every week. Scary!

            AMEN to that.

Fastest 43 qualifiers take the green, everyone else is on the trailer, plain & simple.

I too hate the "top 35" but can see why NASCAR does it. I would actually like to see them make it only the top 12 locked in. That would make those twelve chase spots really mean something. I would also still like them to add 50 or 75 points to the winners points. That would allow someone to make a real jump in the points if they win and would keep the top 12 chaging week to week.

The whole NASCAR points system and qualifying is a joke. A points champion should be the person who gets the most points for the whole season. Period. If they want to have a "playoff", like they have now, then it should be called something else. I'm not a Jeff Gordon fan (although I do respect his abilities) but he should have 2 more championships to his credit. I do like the way they award 10 extra points to the winner. But that should be for every race. I believe now it's only the first part of the season it's awarded. Could be wrong about that.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jerry about the provisionals, etc. I can see having 1 or 2 provisionals per races for those instances when a driver has a problem with qualifying. i.e. wreck, blown motor, transmission, whatever. But limit the amount of provisionals a driver can use in a year to 2 or some other arbitrary number. Completely do away with the champions provisional. Want to make it more interesting. Start 50 cars at Daytona, Talledega and road courses. Start 43 at the 1 mile and larger tracks. Start 40 at Richmond and only 35 at the half mile tracks. Just a silly idea that I have.
