Dunn Finishes Season Second In ASA Late Model Series South Division Standings
By: Devon Holder
Dustin Dunn was able to run up front consistently in the 2009 ASA Late Model Series South Division and stay out of trouble on the track, allowing him to finish runner up to Champion, Drew Brannon. Dunn, who raced the entire season on a shoestring budget, was able to capture 7 top 10’s and 3 top 5’s in 7 starts in the South Division of ‘America’s Premier Short Track Series.’
The 19 year old Jupiter, Florida native knows that it is a great accomplishment for his family team to finish second in the season standings with the funds they have. “This is almost like a championship for us,” said Dunn. “We only bought 10 sets of tires all year. Some of our competition spent more in two races than we did in the whole season.”
Dunn admits that keeping his nose clean and staying out of trouble was a huge reason for his teams 6.14 average finish on the season. “Obviously it is a huge deal to stay out of wrecks and finish consistently,” stated Dunn. “We feel proud in our consistency this year, and I know that with the proper financial backing, we as a team could excel in any car or series there is.”
Dunn would like to race in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division event at Memphis Motorsports Park in November, but knows that without financial backing, it will not happen. “We would love to go to Memphis for The O’Reilly’s King’s Ransom 300 presented by Suncoast Plastering, but we do not have the budget for it,” continued Dunn. “If we could find some financial help for Memphis, I do not see any reason why we would not be competitive and have a chance for a great finish there.”
Dunn knows that even though 2009 did not produce any victories, with his budget, the second place finish in the overall standings was a big deal. “I am very proud of our 2009 season in the ASA Late Model Series South Division,” commented Dunn. “We had some great finishes and were able to keep the same body on the car throughout the year, which is a challenge all in itself.”
Dustin Dunn would like to thank the person who has supported him the most throughout his racing endeavors, his father, Andrew. “My dad was the only reason why we were able to do what we did this season,” said Dustin. “He put in more hours this year for racing than he did at his regular job where he also works 60 hours a week. He is every part of this team; spotter, crew chief, truck driver, tire changer, and most of all, my biggest fan. Without him, we would not have had the success we did.”
Dustin would also like to thank the sponsors that made 2009 a successful season for him in the ASA Late Model Series South Division. “I want to send out a big thank you to Demarsico Custom Trim, Checkered Flag Graphics, Seminole Racing Team, and Fountain Motorsports.”
