  • Truck racing... 305 vs. ZZ4

How far ahead is the ZZ4 compared to 305? Obviously it is better, but by how much?

Also, does anyone have the estimate payout for Orlando / New Smyrna on regular nights for the trucks?

    Thanks.

that's not really the important question.

the important question is, why would you spend a whole bunch of money building a 305 when you could just buy a ZZ4 and get a factory warrantee for less ?

Looking at a truck with the 305 in it... figured I could get some seat time and learn how to work/adjust the truck and then upgrade to the ZZ4 sometime next year. Just don't want to get it if it won't even be even remotely competitive after I get seat time.

I bought a used 305 truck motor as a back up. It was built by Raabe in Daytona. It had been dynoed in a truck and never raced. When the motor in my Sportsman gave out in July I put in the 305. I was very impressed with the power it had and other cars with 355s could not pull me in the straight.
Most of the time it's not the motor on a short track as much as it is with the handling. Bronson is a good example. However at NSS it would relate to power for the long straight.
I was very happy with the 305 till it spun a bearing and broke a rod 2 weeks before the end of our season.

Just a note here. I don't think they warrantee a motor used for racing. Have not heard they do anyway.

The best racing i saw all year with the exception of speedweeks was the final points race in a CRATE sportsman division @ an upstate SC dirt track. These were 602"s.......$3000 engines and you could throw a blanket over the entire field the whole race. The lead changed almost every lap and not by the same two cars.

Make this shit affordable again and the tracks will be FULL of racecars.............and with that comes all the people to watch them.

These were NOT crate LM's but stock chassis cars.
Normalcy is a myth. what is perfectly normal for the Cheetah, Becomes absolute chaos for the Antelope.

              gotta have with a 305

If you're gonna run a 305 with those guys and their "altered" crates, make sure you're running good, two eye pistons and definately #059 casting heads. These heads make a TON of difference! I also found extra horses when I went with a Dr. Gas "X" pipe and a Wilson carb adapter. Mclendon or Barry Grant carb worked good too! Also, you may want to talk to Bodie at Bodies Automotive. He builds a pretty mean Chevy.

Actually that is a very good idea for you.... And the 305 is not as uncompetitive as people think, there are quite a few people with them in there. Alot has to do with the setup of the truck and the engine to make yourself run in the top 5 of the races... SO find a good deal and go racing...
