  • Michael Waltrip Racing to test at non-existant track

Finally - my big chance to meet an active F1 driver. I can't wait to go out there and say, "yeah, you guys got misinformed about this track still existing. How about we go to the Hooters down the street and get some wings and beers and you can impress the waitresses with how you won Monaco in 2004 for Renault. The French are big in this country."

Trulli lines up NASCAR test with MWR

By Steven English Wednesday, October 7th 2009, 08:46 GMT

Jarno Trulli will test for NASCAR Sprint Cup team Michael Waltrip Racing in Florida in November, according to reports in America.

The 35-year-old Italian has not yet signed a contract for next year and last week admitted it was very unlikely that he will remain with Toyota, although he has been linked with the new Lotus F1 team.

Following the F1 season finale at Abu Dhabi on November 1, Trulli wil have a seat fitting with MWR and will join the team to observe the last three races of the year. He is scheduled to test at the (USA) International Speedway in Lakeland in the week before the Cup finale at Homestead Miami.

Steve Hallam, former chief engineer at McLaren, is now the director of competition at MWR and is eager to test drivers with F1 experience in NASCAR.

"As you well know, this is not an easy sport," Hallam told American network Fox Sports. "But from time to time an opportunity arises for both them [open-wheel racers] and us to take a look.

"It's very premature to get carried away with this because it takes a long time for both parties to know where they are in terms of performance."

Trulli will join former grand prix driver Mika Salo in testing for MWR at the end of this season.

actually, i was wondering if they COULD test there... the last time i saw it (from a distance, as they have it locked up pretty tight), it appeared the pavement and walls were intact, unless things have changed... it sure doesnt appear good for anything else right now.

      what old yeller said.

the lights and grandstands are down but it looks like the rest of it is still there. run a street sweeper and blower around it a few times and you'd probably be ready to go for a daylight test.

Stranger things have happened... You never know, since the owner tried dumping it off, maybe he will try and use it for testing purposes only... Why open it back up and have some good races there again... Oh that's right, everything was sold off in planning for a big dig for those warehouses...

Does anyone know if the track still exists as a business entity? I got the impression it didn't. You need the licenses, medical crew and stuff to test.

Yep, that is a strange one. It was suppose to be shut down, no more. But if the track is still there, I guess they could test. No stands, no lights but a track. Stranger things have happened for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd be disappointed in them if they didn't, hell they should put together a special that week or something to catch more of them on the way down or back...
