  • My family is begging for your help...

My youngest sister, Sandy Lupo, has a very rare blood disorder, that will prove to be fatal in 1-3 years if a blood marrow match is not found. She is on a National Registry for Bone Marrow matching, and our family and friends are doing all we can to get as many people possible onto the list. The 2 most likely candidates were my other sister and myself, both of which proved to be a negative. Her chances of a match went from 1 in 4, all the way to 1 in 20,000.

    Understandably, we were/are devastated.

As many of you know, I do an annual BBQ at the New Smyrna Speedway Governors Cup race, which will again occur this year (Saturday, November 21st, from 1:00 - 5:00). This time though, we will be having the people from the HLA Testing (which is the bone marrow registration) along with the Big Red Bus for blood donations. The marrow testing (which is the more important of the 2 for my sister) is a very simple process that involves about 15 minutes of paperwork, and a simple cheek swab that takes less than 2 minutes, and is entirely clean and painless. We are also encouraging people to donate a pint of blood to also save lives of others, maybe even yourselves someday.

The first 100 people that are willing to participate in this will get a BBQ Chicken dinner, some side dishes and a HUGE Thank You from the entire Binner and Lupo families. And you can be assured that a few adult beverages will be very close at hand also!

The people that know me, know that I don't ask for much from others. In this case though, I'm begging anyone willing to help donate an hour of their time to possibly save my sisters life.

If you would like to help, but cannot make it out that day, there are donation centers all over the place, and I could recommend something closer to your area if you'd be willing to help our family.

At any rate, please help if you can, keep her in your thoughts, and hope for the best. Nobody, especially Sandy, is giving up, and never will. We just know that someone out there in the world is the one that can (and will) save her. But it is a numbers game, and anything we can do to increase the odds is what we are going to do.

Thank You sincerely from the bottom of my heart!!!!

Of course I'll get tested. Maybe we'll get lucky!
I am racing there on Friday night, so lets put a big sign on my car, "Get tested at the Bar B Q tomorrow", or however you want it to read, ok?

A typical Binner party: BYOB, "bring your own blood".

Jerry, if you don't mind, I'll put her on our church prayer list. As you know, my wife's been battling breast cancer for 9 years and they told her last week that she may need a bone marrow transplant. She was in the hospital a couple of week ago and recieved 4 units of blood and when she went for her chemo last week her platelets were still critical low. Our faith and prayers from folks in the only thing that has gotten up thru this and I believe that is the reason she is still alive today. Our prayers and thoughs will be with you and your family. Ron

First of all, I want you all to know that the symapthy and willingness to help, means more to our family than I could ever express. The outpouring for Sandy has been overwhelming so far, and our hopes are increasing by the day. Nearly everyone I've talked to has been offering to help, even if they can't make it to NSS, they would still like to help from their own area.

We are trying to find the best ways of getting Donor info out to the out-of area people, but haven't yet found a simple way go get this info to you. We want this to be easy for you... not a pain-in-the-ass project to even find the right place to go. We will eventually find the links that go directly to your nearest center, and the simple proceedures that this test takes.

Please bear with us on this... myself and family aren't exactly cutting-edged computer wizards. BUT, we will get there!

Again, Thank You from the entire Binner & Lupo families!
