Indy car ride at Disney Speedway

I scratched an item off the bucket list yesterday...sort of.

My dad and I took a ride in an Indy car at the Indy Racing Experience located at Disney Speedway. Yes, it was a real Indy car, but it was not a real Indy car engine. We also had to follow a pace car. Now they were not totally unreasonable with the pace car. If you followed the right line and maintained the right distace, the pace car would go faster and faster. If you don't keep up, then they will go whatever speed suits you.

I never got to jump hard on the throttle, but it fun driving through the corners of this strangly shaped, but very racey track. The employee timing us said we were going 114 down the straight, but I am not sure about that.

My dad is 81, but thinks he is 21. He got a kick out of it, and so would anyone who doesn't get the chance to drive racecars regularly.

I paid for mine in a moment of weakness (almost the price of a set of mini stock tires), and wouldn't do it again unless the price drops. BUT if Indy cars are your thing, then give it a try! The employees were really nice, and it is good for any level of experience, or none at all.

i have a "bucket List" too...
I want to skydive... ride in an open cockpit heli over NYC at night and day...
get back to spearfishing, and be able to sit and talk to Tony for a long time. Last time went by in a flash but i will never forget it... he can be so nice and he can sure drive a race car!!!! Did you see the movie "Bucket List" it was great!
Im so happy you and your dad had that special time... neither of you will ever forget it... ;-)
My son went to Daytona to drive a car.... he got up to 130..... said it was terrifying at first but he LOVED it. thats expensive but i think you would have a blast. add it to your bucket list! lol
life is short... ya have to go out and do the things you love or you will continue to look back wishing.,....Ive done alot but not ready to quit! my sister will be here from L.A. for a week. I have to take her to EPCOT on Friday... hahaha that will probably kill me...maybe i will race one of those electric wheelchairs around and harass KIDS! hahaha

Carol, what I'd really like to do is race an Indy Lights car. I went to Indy two years ago and watched the Indy Lights race there. Sure, there were young drivers trying to make a career in the sport, BUT there was also a bunch of middle aged guys like me in rented cars. I know they kept them flat-footed the whole way around Indy, and many of the drivers were amateurs with less experience than me.

There is one difference...those guys have the $$$$. I am sure I could not afford to rent one that unless things go completely haywire. Maybe I could manage John Tenney's Band of One and start raking in the big bucks.

That looks like a lot of fun.I did the sprint cup car there a year or so ago.I like the track there it would be a nice place to see a late model race.

Yeah, the old man was a racer in the 1950's. He built roadsters and stock cars in Ohio, and did as much driving as a father of 5 would dare to do at the time.

It is a cool program. When they started, they did have a real Indy engine (an older Chevrolet) in the two-seater, and acceleration in that thing was pretty amazing. They have replaced that with what I understand is a built V-6 from a Honda Ridgeline pickup, while the cars you drive yourself are powered by the six-cylinder engines from the Honda Gold Wing bike, unless things have changed. I never felt like I was close to the limit in the turns -- so much grip, and the brakes were amazing, but you are right, straightaway speed isn't that exciting. Glad I did it, don't necessarily feel like I need to again.
