  • Another late model series gone

ASA SAT cancelled. This means no race October 10th at DeSoto.

    Athens, Georgia

    September 17

    For Immediate Release:

The Results Management Group, and Results Management Group Racing-parent company for the American Speed Association Southeast Asphalt Tour-announce the cancellation of the balance of the 2009 scheduled race events.

We regret to inform those involved with our series that races scheduled for the remainder of 2009 have been canceled, and will not be rescheduled.

Seeing no prospects for an improved revenue stream that will allow operations to continue under the current business operating model, closing is the only viable alternative.

We remain confident that short track racing is a good product for current economic conditions, with the correct balance of promotion, affordable ticket prices for the fans, reasonable costs to competitors, and more emphasis on the many positive aspects of the sport from the media.

The company and series greatly appreciate the efforts and support of race fans, staff, television production partners and affiliates, sponsors, race facilities, and competitors in producing the high quality race events that have been held over the past two seasons.

    John Kee
    President
    Results Management Group

The positive side is that maybe some of our Florida talent will get off the road, and race in-state more often.

Sorry to disappoint Rex and Carol, but if you look at the top 25 in points, Jeff Choquette was 5th and Tim Russell 22nd. Very few Florida boys ran this series so by cancelling, it does not help the Florida Super Late Model asphalt drivers at all. Sorry

I think it was one of the best late model series since Bob Harmon's All Pro Series.
          Good news though!
Gresham Motorsports Park is holding the World Crown in November.
$15000.00 to win Pro Late Models!
          $2000.00 to win Trucks!
          $1000.00 to win MiniStocks!
          Unbelieveable payout throughout the field!

As far as I know, the new Gresham (the old Peach State), has been completely redone. New pits, new asphalt, new stands, new press box, new bathroom and concessions. I think the only original is the outside retaining walls.
Jeff Choquette and Chase Elliot (Bill's son) did a tire test last week. Did not hear of any speeds.

As far as more good news on the asphalt scene, Montgomery Motor Speedway laid down new asphalt last week as well.

I had opportunity to go by there a few weeks ago on the way home from North Carolina. They have done INCREDIBLE things with that place. Florida fans you will feel at home when you go there as you have sat in the grandstands before....The former USA Speedway stand from what I was told... The surface was completely torn up and they were about to asphalt it. The grandstands had just been put up.

Did the move the stands closer to the track I hope? The old cement on the side of the hill was way to far away from the track. Football field at least from the first row to the track

I'm going to GA next month, will try to look at it midweek if it's not fenced in and locked.

                      REBIRTH

When it re-opens in November 2009, Gresham Motorsports Park will have undergone an entire facelift re-emerging as a whole new racetrack. Gone will be the timeworn amenities of the old Peach State Speedway replaced by an all-new racing surface, upgraded grandstand, rest rooms, concession and lighting amenities.
                      Construction
                      Construction at GMP

A complete repaving of the track’s asphalt racing surface will provide a smoother facility where competitors will find more grip and multiple racing grooves. The result will be greater maneuverability, side-by-side racing and passing opportunities for the drivers while creating increased excitement for the fans.

Participant safety will get a big boost with the refurbishment of the track’s retaining walls and all new ‘catch’ fencing.

An additional asphalt track - approximately one-quarter mile in length- will also be constructed in the infield of the half-mile Gresham Motorsports Park oval. This new track will provide for the addition of new divisions of racing and entertainment.

The Infield Pit and Inspection Areas will be completely renovated. Grading, paving and new pit areas are planned. An Infield Command Center will be constructed that will house the Technical Inspection Station while new Restrooms and Concession facilities will be added.

Lighting for the racing facility will be relocated/updated to accommodate the new start/finish line configuration, main grandstand and concession areas. This will provide enhanced fan/participant safety and premium viewing of the facility’s racing, work, and advertising spaces.

Most notably, the racetrack will be ‘flipped’ when completed with the start/finish line relocated from its current site on the Northeast side of the facility to the Southwest side of the property. This change will allow patrons to enjoy activities while seated in the main grandstand without facing the hot afternoon setting sun.

The new facility will debut in November with two events – a community wide Grand Re-Opening and the 26th-Annual World Crown 300 – in November, 2009. A full schedule of various motorsports and community/regional events are in the planning stages for the 2010 calendar year.

I always wondered about that. I never made it to Peach State but saw a bunch of races on TV when the Hooters Procup ran there. It looked like the stands were way back from the track. Anyone know why they were so much further back than other short tracks?

I think back in the late 1960's, a 1/8 mile dragstrip was located in betweeen the main grandstands and the front stretch of oval raceway; the grandstands could be used to view both facilities.

That's what I was thinking. It looked to be enough distance to have a dragstrip in between. I always wondered how good the view was with sitting so far back. With reversing the front and back stretch during this renovation, it sounds like this has been fixed.

The view was fine, sitting on the hill looking down much like the Lanier track.
