Checkered Flag Points Race Tight Heading To New Smyrna Speedway


The Checkered flag Sprint Series will be returning to the high banked ½ mile New Smyrna Speedway Saturday September 5th. The CFSS will be making their last appearance at New Smyrna Speedway for the 2009 season. The Volusia Penny Saver Night will get underway at 7:30 pm.


After a very successful weekend at Citrus County Speedway the question is can Scotty Adema win again to make it three in a row, or will the Gimmler brothers or Keith Butler be able to stop him? Keith Butler and Gary Gimmler at tied for first place in the driver points with Mark Gimmler only 7 points behind and Scotty in four place 22 point behind.


Some of the other drivers expected to race are Stan Butler, Brian Maddox, David Slawiak, Ric Volsey, Geoff Styner, Robby Hackett, Joey Aguilar, Mickey Kempgens, Tommy Nichols, Dustin Perez, Blaze Martin and Jim Alvis. Also on hand will be the top two Rookie of the year contenders Dustin Henderson leading by only 21 points over Amanda Ferguson

Anyone heard of the finish order of Saturday Nights Show on the HIGH BANKS?

Hopefully they got the race in. Weather is so hard to deal with at this time of year. I saw that they had 19 at one point signed up. Can't wait to see the CFSCS coming back to CCMP on Sept. 19th. Don has done a GREAT job of getting the Program up and running. We are sure looking forward to the OPEN Wheel "STAR WARS" on Jan.30 & 31st. Please let us know if you were there!!!

WOW!! Wished I could of seen the SHOW!!!!! I count 22 cars!!!! WOW!!!! That's a record for the CFSCS itself!!!! Here is the STORY:
Mark Gimmler Takes CFSS Win At New Smyrna

The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) made their second visit of the year to New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday September 5, 2009 with 20 cars to run a very eventful schedule of three heat races and a 30 lap feature race.

Dustin Perez in the 70 car had the pole for the start of the first heat race alongside Amanda Ferguson in the 20 car. The start was recalled due to an uneven start but as the cars entered turn one the 21A driven by Mark Whitney went into the outside wall between turns one and two.

The rear end of the car was broken and the car had to be taken off the track on a wrecker, ending the nights racing for that car. The cars lined back up for a full restart and this time they got away cleanly.

Mark Gimmler in the 51 car came through from his third place starting position to take the race lead and went on to win the heat. Tommy Nichols had the pole for the start of the second heat race. The 69 of Ric Voisey was supposed to be on the outside pole but after two trips around the track in front a push vehicle the car still would not fire and did not start the heat race.

This gave the outside pole to David Slawiak in the 79 car who took the race lead at the start of the race and went on to win the heat. The 15jr of Geoff Styner had the pole for the start of the third heat race, but was unable to start the race due to mechanical issues giving the pole to the 19 car of Keith Butler with Mickey Kempgens in the 78 car on the outside.

The 78 took the lead at the start of the race while he went on to take the heat win, a fierce battle for second place between Keith Butler in the 19 car and Joey Aguilar in the 52 car was following him. After many changes in position between the two cars it was Joey Aguilar who finally claimed second place.

19 cars took to the track for the feature race. After some warm up laps, the cars got lined up and then performed the 4-wide parade lap to salute the fans that had come out to see the races. As the cars started to get back into the 2 wide starting grid after the parade lap, the 21 car driven by Jim Alvis lost a wheel on the back straightaway.

Luckily the cars around him were able to avoid both his car and the loose tire.

While the 21 car was being attended to, the 15jr of Geoff Styner pulled off the track with continued mechanical problems. Once the 21 car was removed from the track, the cars lined back up with Tommy Nichols in the 55 car on the pole and Mickey Kempgens in the 78 car on the outside.

The 78 made the better start and took the early race lead. The first red flag of the night came on lap 3 when the 22 car driven by Dustin Henderson ran along the wall between turns one and two after contact with another car. The 22 got airborne and rolled twice before coming to rest on it’s wheels. Dustin was OK, but the car was done for the night.

The cars were pushed back off and the78 car led them off for the restart. The 59 of Danny Statter retired to the infield on lap 4 followed by A.J. Maddox in the 2 car on lap 5. The second red flag of the night came on just lap 7. Keith Butler in the 19 car was bumped by another car going into turn three, ripping the tire off the car and sending him into the wall at turn four.

As he bounced off the wall, the 29 car also made contact with another car and a patch of oil shooting him into the wall just a few feet away from the 19 of Keith Butler. Both drivers are OK. The 19 was able to restart after just a wheel change which he was able to complete before the restart but the 29 of Gary Gimmler was badly damaged and was taken off the track on a wrecker with the front end hanging off.

Under the red flag, the 0 car was sent to the infield with an oil leak and the 52 of Joey Aguilar was disqualified. Once the track was cleared up, the remaining cars lined back up and took the restart. They got as far as turn one when the 67 of Scott Adema and the 55 of Tommy Nichols met with the wall at turns one and two after contact with another car.

The 67 was refired, but the 55 of Tommy Nichols had a nerf bar jammed into the rear tire, the 5 of Blaze Martin had a flat tire and the 82 pulled off with a broken tire rod. With just seven laps complete, over half of the field was gone. The remaining 8 cars lined back up for the restart and this time got away cleanly. The 67 of Scott Adema apparently sustained some damage in the previous crash and pulled off after only one more lap, on lap 9. Mickey Kempgens in the 78 was still in the lead and David Slawiak in the 79 car was chasing him down in second place.

David made a move for the lead coming out of turn four on lap 11 and over-committed, scraping the wall on the front straightaway and breaking something on the car causing him to pull off only one lap later, leaving the 51 of Mark Gimmler in second place to chase the leader. The 69 of Ric Voisey pulled off the track on lap 22. Having caught up to the race leader, the 51 of Mark Gimmler made a move for the lead on lap 24 and made it stick to take the lead away from the 78 and started to pull away from the field.

Meanwhile a battle between the 19 of Keith Butler, the 70 of Dustin Perez and the 20 of Amanda Ferguson for third, fourth and fifth place was going on. Keith was able to hang on to third place while Amanda stole fourth position from Dustin on the last turn of the last lap. Mark Gimmler in the51 took the feature win followed by Mickey Kempgens in the 78 car, Keith Butler in the 19 car, Amanda Ferguson in the 20 car, with Dustin Perez in the 70 car rounding out the top five. Mark Gimmler also wins the Barfield Clean Sweep Award for winning both his heat race and the feature race.
