  • Stew Reamer Passes

    From National Speed Sport News:

At press time Monday (Aug. 31), National Speed Sport News learned of the death of one of auto racing’s greatest friends.

Stew Reamer, who in recent years contributed his opinions on the motorsports world through his column “Cynic in the Stands” in this publication, died over the weekend.

Reamer did about everything there was to do in auto racing at one point or another.

He worked in NASCAR’s advertising department in the 1950s, worked for IMCA promoter Frank Winkley and announced races at Raceway Park in Shakopee, Minn., among other race tracks.

Reamer, who also tried his hand at driving for a time, teamed with the late Hugh Deery to produce the first Promoter’s Workshop in 1971.

Reamer began Racing Promtion Monthly, a monthly newsletter for race track operators in 1972, and in 1973 held the second RPM Workshop.

The annual gatherings have been commonplace ever since.Reamer handed the reins of RPM and its workshops over to Stew Doty in the early 1990s.

Several racing awards are named in his behalf, including RPM’s Stew Reamer Distinguished Service Award.

Reamer’s age, which he liked to keep secret, could not be confirmed at press time.
