  • ASA South at Concord. Wild night!!!

Colt James wins wild night at Concord

Concord, North Carolina (Saturday, September 29, 2009): The ASA Late Model Series South returned to the Concord Speedway for Saturday nights running of the “Supersonic 100. A strong field of cars showed up for what turned out to be one of the wildest nights in ASA Late Model History.

Colt James would show early on that he would be the man to beat as he shattered the previous ASA Late Model Track record with a 16.004 (112.472 MPH). After drawing an eight for the invert, Jeff Fultz would start on the pole and lead the first 48 laps as Colt James was powering his way to the front. On Lap 49 James would take the lead and never look back, even when the field was bunched back up at several cautions, James would pull away again.

A strong showing by Justin Larson ended on lap 67 as something broke going into turn one and ending his night. Trent Snyder worked his way to fourth and was working on local driver Roger Newton for third when the two made contact with the #33 of Newton spinning, as the field dodged to miss the wreck Brandon Johnson was shoved into the inside wall ending his night. On the restart Trent Snyder now running third would look to make the pass on Jeff Fultz for second but couldn’t make it stick and would settle for third. As the field was getting the white flag the #33 of Roger Newton would slow down the back stretch, Colt James would come around for the victory, but the action was just getting ready to start, on the track. As the field came around on the cool down lap the #33 of Newton got behind the #88 of Snyder and plowed into the back of Snyder’s car going down the back stretch but it wasn’t done there, as Snyder tried to make his way to the front stretch for victory lane proceedings, Newton wasn’t done with Snyder and continued to destroy the Snyder’s car as well as his own. With both cars laying mangled at the exit of turn four, Newton’s crew would join in by trying to fight Snyder on the front stretch. Safety and Sherriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to break it up and let calmer heads prevail.

Almost lost in the melee was the dominating win by Colt James and a great run by Jeff Fultz. This was the second big win for James in as many weeks as he won the big Pro Late Model Invitational at Concord Speedway a couple of weeks earlier.

I can't say that 16 cars is a "strong" field... In a race held at one of the premiere tracks in NC, only 5 drivers from NC show up!! Thank goodness you had the 8 from FL and the one guy from AZ or there would not have been much to watch...

Dave, strong does not always mean big. lol We did have a strong field. Every car was a quality car. Will, except my '94 Frankie Grill car. But it still gets the job done.

Here is something from Speed 51 about the aftermath.

The other cars from NC were all at Hickory for the PASS South race. Jeff Choquette showed up after his ASA SAT race was cancelled, led almost all of the 150 laps until 13 year old Chase Elliott (yes that Elliott) ran him down and passed him like a pro on the last lap. 33 cars took time, 28 started after last chance race. Awesome race, great track and good racing through the field.

The after race retaliation, with the race car as a weapon, is going to get someone killed someday.

looks like we've got to wait a bit to get the full results posted. this is all i can find on Hickory's web site:
            http://www.hickorymotorspeedway.com/2009/8_29_09.htm

PASS is saying they had 28 cars:
            http://www.proallstarsseries.com/

i'm guessing it's not a great idea to try to run head-to-head against PASS. ( AJ will assume that my ability to find the PASS web site means i'm a PASS fanboi )

Jeff Choquette showed up after his ASA SAT race was cancelled

we've got to schedule three big races on top of each other?

maybe there's just too many touring series?

After drawing an eight for the invert

he passed half the field as it was and still had the lead by lap 49. would it really be so hard to do a full invert? as you note, there were plenty of cautions to close the field up. this is typical.

We were sorry to here that Chase moved Jeff out of way like that on the last lap for the win but it is still nice to have both of the Fountain Motorsports car in the top 5 at two different events in N.C. on the same weekend with Jeff at Hickory and Dustin at Concord. Here is a shot of Dustin In the Fountain #59.

Can't find a picture of Jeff from Hickory yet.

The #15 of James, #66 of Fultz, the #33 of Newton were not ASA car and were the class of the field all weekend. The ASA cars were 2-3 tenth slower every round. The #88 of Synder and the #59 of Dunn were the only ASA cars in the top 5.

I'm pretty sure James, Newton, and Fultz are "pro-latemodels" which are the same thing as ASA cars, but with different weight rules. But they ran the same weight as the rest of us that weekend. The ASA cars weren't at a disadvantage, James and Fultz just had there stuff rolling. I would have finished 3rd if I wouldn't have got dumped with a few to go.

                      Astin,
They may have looked like our cars but that is about it. They had resealed motors that did not have ASA seals and were not from approved ASA engine builders. They did not have approved wiring harness. They all did not have ASA approved icnition boxes. They had things evacuating air out of the cockpit. They had exhaust exiting the door. They have different shock and brake rules. In the ASA rules it says that cars like this will have weight and percentage pentalties but they didn't get them. They had a big advantage. Why was there 3 out of 4 them in the top 5 after qualifying? And to say that you would have finished 3rd if you didn't get dumped. Does that mean we would have finished 2nd if we didn't dumped by the same car while running 2nd and went back to 10th. That is hard to say. With about 15 to go I told my driver to stay heads up because the 08 was going to take you out because you kept chopping his nose every time he got inside of you in turn 3. Sure enough he had his nose up to your LR again and you came acrosses his nose again.

We had about a 5th to 7th place car and finished 4th because we know who to race and when to let a faster car go. You had about a 4th to 6th place car and tried to block your way to 3rd. It didn't work. I thing you would have been better off letting him go and finishing 4th. There is a time to race and there is a time to let a faster car go. That is something that your spotter and team needs to work on for you to get better finishes in the future.

They wouldn't have this problem if ASA South could actually draw a full field of their own cars but the fact is they can't. The two competing ASA series has split one of the best traveling series in the South. I remember Bronson 2007 where the ASA late models had 41 cars show up.. and yeah we won that race.

DeMan, how the hell are you doing? Yah it is a big problem. But there is only one more ASA South race and then that will proabily not be an ASA South series in 2010.

That was a hell of a race at Bronson. And just think. We would have finished 4th if we didn't cut a tire with 10 to go. LMAO Are you guys bringing a car to the Oct.3rd race. We miss having you guys there.

I am doing alright just been busy with the family and we got custody of my 5 year old nephew now. As for racing we have run twice in the HES series at DeSoto and had some good runs so out plan is for us to run the ASA SAT race at DeSoto on October 10th. I am not 100% sure if I will be there though since my wife is due with our second child October 15th. lol
Good luck to Dustin at CCMP!

wild. just caught the tail end of a show on Speed called "Mobil 1, The Grid". another episode with be on again at 3pm on Sunday, don't know if it will be a rebroadcast or a new episode.

who could have been expecting nationwide coverage for this race?

they interview several guys in the race and ( i think ) they show Dustin in the background a couple of times but never talk to him.

that one guy who had his steering break? d'oh!
