    Columbia County Speedway History--

Since it's going to be this Sunday, why not bring a little history of the Raceway to the forefront, of this fine Raceway, if that's OK----------(hope so)

Gateway National Raceway, built in 1974, has also been called North Florida Raceway at times, and most currently Columbia Motorsports Park.
Built in 1974, it was a 1/2 mile semi-banked clay oval up until 1987.
In 1988 it was paved over with asphalt, from what i've read.
Nothing is stated about 1989, so I think it was closed. However, in 1990 to present, the Raceway has been alive, next to some name changes.

Thanks to Mr. Roche and his Books, Florida Motorsports Retrospective Pictorial (pub.1997), and History of Americas Speeway, Past and Present, by Allan E. Brown (1-2-3-edition).

    Known promoters have been:
Benny Corbin and Julian Klein, Marlowe Smith, Charles Severence, Billy Joe Blalock, Bud Brown, Stan Wilkinson, Skip Valdez, Bert Ashelman, R.C. Dicks, and the most current promoter, Don Nerone.

        I hope...

I hope all of you arrive safely and have the most wonderful time of your lives. LeRoy... sorry i will miss you. im having some health problems and will call you next week.
Joyce.... you have done a miraculous job putting this together and i commend you for allowing so many people this opportunity to be together. i also think what you did will bring alot of people to the speedway that have never been there and they too will be in awe of its charm and beauty. Great job... sandy and don... good luck and i pray it is dry in lake city for this event!
God bless and keep you all safe.
