Subject: PIONEERS OF MOTORSPORTS--GARY LONDON'S RACING JOURNAL

    Tidbits From The Journal

    BY GARY LONDON--NSSN

    VALLEY STREAM, N.Y.

I wonder if the government will include the Car of Tomorrow in its Cash For Clunkers program.

    • The easiest job in racing has to be Miss Sprint. She stands in victory lane with a perpetual smile and never blinks. Most of the jobs I had, there was a written test. I don’t think that is part of hiring Miss Sprint.

    • Great to hear Keith Kauffman made it back to victory lane at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway. Keith had split from his eight-year ride. He’s 59 and still can do the job.

    • NASCAR ought to use a personality template on Robin Pemberton.

    • While IRL and NASCAR having road- course races on the same weekend wasn’t exactly thrilling to me, seeing them on HDTV was superb. If you haven’t gone that route yet, do so. The folks at Versus do a great technical job and as a bonus, no shills on the mike.

    • I heard rumblings of rain tires again. Puleeezeee don’t. There is nothing dumber than racing in the rain. Sanctioning bodies and tracks want it so they can go home with the cash a day earlier.

    • Have you noticed the TV ads for tickets at Bristol? This race used to be a sell-out.

    • I wonder if Labor Day at Atlanta will bomb like it did at California? Here’s a suggestion: try Darlington!

    • Gillette has added Joey Logano to its Young Guns. Don’t you have to have started shaving to be selling razors?

    • Stevie Smith in the Zemco No. 1 is working out rather well. Smith replaced sprint-car veteran Jeff Shepard after a career-ending crash during last season’s Knoxville Nationals.

    • I thought Marcos Ambrose’s move on Kyle Busch was one of the niftiest I’ve seen in a long time. By the way, Kyle, the Glen is wine country, not “whine” country.

    • Rusty Wallace has picked up “has-ran-itis” from Larry McReynolds. Rusty’s son Steven was docked a lap for “improper hand gesture” by NASCAR. If they did that when the late Al DeAngelo was racing, poor Al would be a season behind.

    • Milka Duno should be designated as a “chicane” by the IRL. If Herman Beam was the “turtle,” what is she?

    • When Shane Hmiel wins the Indy 500 in a couple of years, I hope he thanks NASCAR for making it possible.

    • I see Jimmie Johnson is selling his $4 million condo in NYC. I’m not the only one bummed out by New York taxes!

    • A belated 83rd birthday wish to Frankie Schneider, who won hundreds of features, mostly starting in thr back and raced hard and clean.

    • I was waiting for Paul Page, anchoring the hot dog-eating contest on ESPN, to ask winner Joey Chestnut, after downing 70 dogs, if he wanted fries with them.

    • Williams Grove Speedway has twin 20s for sprint cars this Friday and no dreaded time trials, as their announcer Bruce Ellis correctly calls them.

    • Sorry to hear of the passing of longtime New York writer John Hill. He was one of the best and a good guy. RIP.

    • Ken Brenn’s fourth annual car show will be held in Warren, N.J., Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. You can download a registration form at www.warrennj.com.

    • Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened 100 years ago on Aug. 12. It has given and taken alot for many.

The older I get, the better I used to be at 25 Emerson Place, Valley Stream, N.Y. 11580.

Gary London is one of the best racing writers of all time in my book. He has seen firsthand, all the changes that racing has gone through over the last 50 years or so. Great sense of humor he has, and you won't ever find a straighter shooter than Gary. I need to get him to come to the Reunion... it's right up his alley!
