  • I noticed something in the last Buzzie picture, that probably only means something to me. The sponsor on the quarter panel, is Ferlito Farms in Oswego NY. Jim Ferlito is a long ago friend of mine who has been a long-time supporter of the Reutimanns. I knew of buying engines, tires, etc. for Buzzie, but it was always more of a 'silent partner' type deal. This is the first time I've seen Ferlito Farms on a racecar that wasn't one of Jims own cars. Never a driver himself, Jim was/is a huge supporter of Oswego Speedway, and has owned Supermodifieds, DIRT Mods, and one of the first ever in existence ESS Sprint cars in NY.

In fact, although Jims team and ours ran against each other in NY, I never met the man up there. I wound up meeting him in the infield at East Bay on a practice day prior to Sprint Speedweeks there. He brought his Rookie (to Sprint cars) driver with him from NY, but figured Wayne Reutimann could get it up to speed quicker than a rookie could. Wayne was given the ride for the week. That was the same week Jeff Gordons name was ever heard in the racing world, Kenny Schrader & Rich Vogler were parked next to us, and 4 Kinsers wound up in a single crash. Both Joe Saldana (Sr) and Lee Osborne won races that week, which were some of the final wins in these two Hall of Fame careers.

Doug Mullins was the owner, however a promoter at one time was called "State Trooper Highsmiht".
        State Trooper Highsmith---if that's not a buzz-kill, I wouldn't know any better.
And I'm sure it was announced over the PA, that STATE TROOPER HIGHSMITH was watching you're every movement.
I really can't say for sure, but I'll bet the pit's were sound and tight, and the grandstands were awfully friendly.
J/K--I'm sure he was an OK fella'.
I am one of the owners of the property where one of these race tracks was. I'm not sure if it was Ft Pierce race track or Treasure Coast race track. But I walked on the other side of the fence last week at the back of our property and walked on what remains of the track. There is still a good little chunk of it back there. There are hundreds of tires everywhere back there. There is also something that is made of cynder block that stands about 6 feet tall. Don't know if it was a snack bar or just stands. We have known about the track since we built our place here in 1981 but I had never actually been back there to check it out. Pretty cool.

Where are you getting this info as I would like to read some of this history myself.

I had a friend who lives in Ft Pierce and went to the track many times go and look for it last year and any trace is gone. I believe that a John Deere tractor dealership is on the north side of Orange Ave near where Mullins' house and track were located. The track, a quarter mile paved oval, operated from 1956-59 and closed when a rival car owner (Mullins owned race cars too) got mad and built what we know as Treasure Coast Speedway in 1959. It ran until April 1974.

The building you are talking about if it is on the north side of the property it was the concession stand in the pit area. The stands were on the south side of the property the part of the track that was removed for your property was the 4th turn all that is left would be part of the front straight turns 1 and 2 the back stretch and maybe some of the 3rd turn. Had a lot of good times there when I was a kid sure do miss it.

However, there is another Deland Fairgrounds raceway built in 1924, and ran it's last race in 1953. It was a 1/2 mile dirt oval at the old, old Volusia Co. Fairgrounds. Located next to the Babcock Aircraft Corp. plant in WWII.

Deland also had another one, Deland Midget's Speedway, which was a 1/8 mile dirt oval in 1937. It obviously, ran midget cars, probably not full-bodied stock cars.

There are remnants of these raceways, I think.
                  Has anyone seen these Raceways?
Yes,there is the old grandstands but it has been converted into a storage barn. If you go inside you can still see the heavy steal I beam that were used. This was a very nice grandstand especially back in the 20's. The race track outline can somewhat be seen but is pretty overgrown. The area is now used for winter quarters for a circus so there is no access.

                    • The Blountstown speedway was a go kart track located in the Sam Atkins Park just off of Hwy 20 on the west side of town. I did not see any listing found/unfound for the Boss Hogg Speedway located on the west side of US231 just soth of te intersection of Hwy 20.Also there was a first class go kart track on the south side of Tallahassee. It was called Hyman Myers Speedway.

                          • check out terra server. if you look at the baseball park in Blountstown, then pull up the 1993 image (might be 1999), you'll see the track. It was just east of the 4 baseball diamonds. Now there are 2 baseball fields where the track was. My brother went to FSU in the early 90s. One time I visited him and I went to the kart dirt track south of campus but can't remember where it was. There is no sign of it now though, wherever it was. Tallahassee has really changed.

there is the old North FL in Wewahitchka, east of Panama City, the oval is still there but nothing else I think. Closed around 2005. And obviously, there is the active North FL in Lake City. Boss Hogg got turned into a motocross track, not sure what it is now.

                            • Cocoa Raceway---Titusville,Fl.

                              Located in Sharps, Titusville, Area-------

Was a big 1/2 miler--dirt track in 1948, on the grounds that are just to the southof the currant go-cart raceway off of Hwy 1. Ran AAA sanction races then. A big field, and a big old brick flagstand, VIP stand are all that I had seen, back in 1989--- it had a big fat concrete block VIP/Tower in the middle of it, I have a picture of it and that what was there, as far as that ol raceway goes.

But yeserree, that was the location of Cocoa Raceway. Titusville, Florida

It was the site of Off-Road Racing in the mid-80's, and, so is the Go-Cart Raceway, and you can still see do this day, underneath the High Voltage Lines, where it stood.

Today, it has been turned into more.....get this......more SoftBall Diamands.

                              • Many people have forgotten Frasson-Donaldson Speedway that operated between WWI and WWII...
One of the most unique tracks ever built... Turns 1 & 2 were paved, turns 3 & 4 were dirt. The front stretch was brick and the back stretch was boards. Made it very difficult to set up your race car.
Was located on a remote hill in the middle of the Everglades, not accessible by any wheeled vehicle... Racers were brought in by helicopter... Fans came to the track (and watched from) hot air balloons and blimps.
Feature winners received a trophy and 10 pounds of alligator meat.
The area is populated today by a clan of boa constrictors...
