  • New name for Speedworld

In light of the chronic track leakage problem, and the many nights of racing lost because of this, a new name for Orlando Speedworld has been proposed.

"Bithlo Falls Speedway", I'm all for it!

This was the biggest laugh I had on Sunday, and it came from a buddy and fellow KARNACian whose name rhymes with "odd". You figure it out.

You know you all keep on busting Robert Hart's ass about Speedworld, he may just decide to sell it for development. Then we all will be screwed! Better to have a little racing than none at all.

some one should buy that track and make dirt track

you would not need a water truck already has water systems there ,

      i know there are all ready a lot of dirt tracks around but some one would get rich . after all drivers got tru bitchin about they are asphalt racers they hate dirt ;

well they don't get to race any way people in orlando would go crazy and the place would be packed would make a nice dirt track

I'd just as soon quit as to run in that crap. Dirt is for "plantin taters" as the saying goes.

"he may just decide to sell it for development. Then we all will be screwed! Better to have a little racing than none at all."

That's the problem Dave... there IS no racing going on. At least the dirt shows would have a lot better chance of getting run. And better supported. And more action. And more fans.

Just because you think that dirt is for planting taters, doesn't mean it couldn't be a very sound business decision.

Realistically, how many racers support OSW on a weekly basis? How many only show up once in a while? Now, look at East Bay or Volusia... MANY of the racers at those tracks are there every single week, year after year... many of them over 25 years in a row.

Other than David Rogers, name me ONE other guy who really supports the local tracks on an on-going basis?

It's funny how one minute your sticking your head up to Robert harts butt cheeks and then the next, your acting like your better than everyone else. If you were half the racer you claim to be then you would be just as irritated as everyone else.

              To dd38,

A joke is a short story or ironic depiction of a situation communicated with the intent of being humorous.

I never bust Mr. Hart's a$$; I happen to admire his dedication to the sport.

By the way, dirt or pavement, I like it all.

you know why some people hate dirt

they don't know any thing about it . can't drive it want try it . sit dow dirt hater and watch a dirt race on tv once 40 .000 to win or 100.000 to win or got to a local track were the pits are full and so are stands .

i love them both when an asphalt track is working thats great but when it keeps losing it's time for a change

it's time some body doe's something with that gold mine in orlando before it's too late

yet again, the track surface is not the problem.

not in the attendance figures and not with the drainage issue. i have to wonder what kind of ruts would develop if that track was turned to dirt and nothing was done about the water runoff.

Let me tell you something OSR 2. I'm not sticking my head up anybody's ass. I'm no better than anyone else (maybe you think you are). And i'm more of a racer than you are because I am racing. But I am glad Robert Hart does own it. Anyone else would have bulldozed it years ago for some sort of development. Certinally not a race track. I've been racing out there since 1979 and been attending since it opened. I'm not irritaded, but fusturated. This is nothing new. This has been a issue (the rain) for several years. Anybody remember when the hurricanes came through a few years ago? It isn't just the track is wet, but this time of year it rains out there around dinner time and continues for a while. I can't control Mother Nature. Maybe you can. Try and help us out. By the way, do you even have a car and race out there. Or are you just a Bleacher Rat? Do you even go to Speedworld? I do my best to support Speedworld, no matter who owns it. By converting it to dirt would make no difference. Maybe at first for a couple weeks. Then you factor in the traffic to get there with all the new developments on that side if town on Friday nite now. Nobody from Volusia or Ocala is goning to come race there. Plus why would cars come from Ocala and Volusia to Speedworld on a Friday or even a Saturday nite when those tracks are in their backyard. Those tracks roots started in dirt. Speedworld roots are in Asphalt. Seems I remember a Dirt Track rite next door to Speedworld and I don't remember any huge crowds. In fact I don't remember any crowds at all. As far as David Rogers goes, he only races out there when there is a special. His home track is New Smyrna. Mine is Speedworld. Why don't you all get together and buy it and either fix it or turn it into a Dirt track? Why don't you come out and race there and take a chance on the weather? Ron I know you have cars. What's your excuse? Don't know about the rest. I like Speedworld because I can be competative there with my car. Me, Myself and I support my car. I only had one person help me out over the years with machine work and fuel, but he passed away last February 18th,2008. I took it to New Smyrna Saturday and felt like I took a Knife to a Gunfight. And no it wasn't the handeling so don't tell me I need to work on that part. It was horsepower. My engine is built to run at Speedworld and similar/smaller tracks. If dirts so much better, then Google Murphy Speedway in Sweetwater, Tennessee. That is a beautiful track. And still could be. Problem is it's been closed for going on 6 years. Why? Too much competition from other tracks in the area and no support. Was good at first, but then the New wore off. So How about it all, Come support Splashworld, oh I mean Speedworld. And OSR 2, lets see the Real Name. Until next time,

                    David Debelius (aka dd38)

                      Let's see....Where do I start?....Let's start at the beginning.
Ocala Speedway has always been my home track. Dad started taking me there as soon as I was out of diapers, probably 72-73. Started driving in 86 when I was 16 in dad's late model. Been involved with racing ever since on and off. Started racing on my own in 91 and was points champion in my class in 94. In 95 after going threw 5 motors in 6 weeks, started my officiating career [ on and off] up til the end of last year. While I was doing that, for 10 of those years, I was racing karts with my kids [ numerous wins and several track championships during that time and no they didn't make them go fast, I did.] Pretty good for a "Bleacher Rat"..Huh?
Now to your other question about "owning a race car". Yes I do. 2 matter of fact. Thanks for asking.
As for whether or not I go to Speedworld?.......Hell No. It's a 2 hour haul and for what? To watch a quarter full field of cars run features only?..No thanks. I can drive 10 minutes from my home to Ocala Speedway and watch more cars and see more exciting racing in just their heat races.
Now we do agree on one thing. I don't want to see any track close. It just sucks to see the same old problem, week after week, and it doesn't seem like it's getting any better, any time soon.

Not like it really matters since most people on here know me, but my name is
Jimbo Bird, Ocala, Fla........anything else?...Just ask.

Just to make a little point here:

Ocala has been 'rained out' 9 times(I think) so far this year. And a few of those rain outs were from rain a day or two before race day.
Also a point here: Ocala has had a weeping problem for years between turn one and two and farther in turn two. Many a time we would waste gas and dry the track, only to have a 'water fall' out of turn two.
It came from under the wall, so they would stack bags of speedy dry up against the leak so we could race.
It probably leaks to this day, but it don't matter anymore.....

Mutha nature affects all forms of racin(except mud bogs) so we just have to live with it here in Flori-duh..JMO
                        -JIM-
RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.

My point exactly. You don't even come. Won't attempt to come. Never been there. So why worry or badmouth about what the track does!

From talking to a person on the Splashworld problem. It is the fact that it suffers from the infield being dug out to below the local water table. The answer would have been sump pumps and a drain system to handle that but alias that is in the past. To retro design the track might be just to expensive at this stage. There are MANY tracks with Weeper problems Pocono for one and Texas BUT that is just the nature of design of a facility. Once it is built other than a a rebuild it is what you see is what you get.
Twice this year once with the car and the last time without I came down from S.C. to run with DAARA. I hear about your 2 hour or 1.5 hour drives but try 8 hours ONE WAY.
I hope that they do get to race but the OLD dirt track at what was called Bithlo back in the 1990's got a good rain and we waited it out with the Florida Mini Sprints and the track was ready to run. AGAIN same property different design.
Next time it floods try motor boats
