According to this if anyone wants to they better do it by midnight tonight......

AP sources: Government to suspend 'cash for clunkers' program out of funding concerns
By Ken Thomas, Associated Press Writer
On Thursday July 30, 2009, 8:33 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government plans to suspend its popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday.

The Transportation Department called lawmakers' offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Thursday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the program, declined comment.

Congress last month approved the Car Allowance Rebate System program, known as CARS, to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads. The program kicked off last Friday and was heavily publicized by car companies and auto dealers.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system, prompting the suspension.

A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet approved by NHTSA, or nearly 13 trades per store. It raised concerns that with about 23,000 dealers taking part in the program, auto dealers may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicle sales funded by the $1 billion program.

"There's a significant backlog of 'cash for clunkers' deals that make us question how much funding is still available in the program," said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the dealers association.

Even before the suspension, some in Congress were seeking more money for the auto sales stimulus. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., wrote in a letter to House leaders on Wednesday requesting additional funding for the program.

"This is simply the most stimulative $1 billion the federal government has spent during the entire economic downturn," Miller said Thursday. "The federal government must come up with more money, immediately, to keep this program going."

Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said they would work with "the congressional sponsors and the administration to quickly review the results of the initiative."

General Motors Co. spokesman Greg Martin said Thursday the automaker hopes "there's a will and way to keep the CARS program going a little bit longer."

      it looks like

taxpayers that didn't move fast enought or didn't think that their older car needed to be traded in get the big screw again. However, that is how the United States Government works, they think they know everything but screw everything up. Instead of given money out for dumb plans like this, they could of given everyone a free year and not taken any tax money this year and let everyone spend it on what you wanted or needed to buy. New truck, new race car, tires for that race car, etc. and be ahead of the game.

Ahh another wonderful waste of taxpayer resources...

I know, lets take taxpayer dollars (ok we will actually just print more since we dont have it) and offer 4500 for people to trade in their "clunkers" so we can get them into a new expensive car loan so they can be burdened with more debt (and get some interest money flowing to the banks)...

It makes perfect sence, and dont forget the "big corporations" we will be helping out! The same corporations that cant manage their businesses, but we will keep taking from the taxpayer and funnel it back into the losing proposition. Eh, thats ok. GM will be a fitting government-run company, they share a lot of the same traits... except GM cant directly exploit the taxpayers like the gov't can.

Ok.. Time to pee in someone's Cheerios... Imagine that, a program that gives someone free money to get into debt deeper than they can already manage to handle... Hmm just think of the family, mom-dad-2.2 kids already in debt up past their ARSE... Dumping their family heap to get into more payments that they damn well sure can't afford...

Of course the blame isn't all to be put on our lame brains in power.... Some of it is to be put on the people who have lost their sensibilities and go for this when they know that they cannot afford to do it..

One other thing, a credit score is not necessarily a sign that someone can't afford a payment or more... He/She may have had a problem in the past and they couldn't get out of it without causing damage to their credit score/history...

One other little note.... I heard on the news this morning that the program is out of money... Damn good, I hope they don't try to resurrect this new "dumb" deal...

YOu might also want to read the article in the newest issue of Circle Track about this....

              Have a great day all...

This program I have to say, I think is dumb. While the big picture of sparking the economy etc may be nice, putting people in new cars they can't afford is dumb and not gonna help. I am disappointed that they are adding more money to it - don't worry though - I will still argue for other things that will piss some people off around here.

                          St Pete Times

Cash for Clunkers help out imports. Locally, dealerships selling foreign cars have seen the biggest books in sales. But it has mostly been a home run for the Japanese and Korean automakers. (Saturday August 1, 2009) So much for bailing out GM & CHRYSLER and this did not help out the union auto workers. It isn't the government money that the government is wasting its ours.

DO NOT GO TO THE GOVERNMENT SITE AND LOG_IN. I opened the site and our firewall went NUTS.
When you log in your computer DOES become PROPERTY OF THE US GOVERNMENT since you are logging on to THEIR network. Think of YAHOO on steroids.
BAD NEWS as far as your personnel information goes.

i was listening to an interview with the Congresswoman who wrote this bill. she said, "I hope that most of the new cars purchased are American". well here's a hot tip, you stupid bimbo.

YOU WROTE THE BILL. if supporting american manufacturers was all that important to you, you would have included a clause that this program only applies to models from one of the big Detroit 3.

maybe if retards like you and John Conyers would actually bother to read the bills you sign into law, you'd figure asininely simple concepts like this out.
