I'm wondering... Just how many tracks keep up with who has the fastest time recorded in each particular class over time? Although, you know my feelings about time trials for races under 200 laps in length, as an announcer, it's neat to have an idea if someone has broken, or gotten close to the track record for their class...
Do any tracks or Series even keep up with those stats anymore? New Smyrna used to have a board in the pit office with all the quick times on it, but I'm not sure if it's still there... I have the article somewhere buried in a box, but Tony Lavati actually holds the ultimate lap time at NSS. It was set in the early '70s with his 4WD Supermodified and as the article claims "was the fastest single lap ever recorded on a half mile." Not sure if that was really true at the time, but I was there that night and he was flying... Blew the engine on the second lap of the feature and caused a massive pile-up... It was the same night that Jim Shampine flipped down the front stretch...
I used to keep really good stats at Orlando, but most of that stuff has disappeared over time... I do know that the all-time track record for a Super Late Model at OSW was set by Pete Orr in April 1998 (just after the track was paved) at 13.297... Dave Steele's TBARA Sprint was clocked (on a watch from the pits) a couple of years ago during hot laps at 12.7/12.8 over five consecutive laps...
At Golden Gate they used to even time each race and if a driver set a new record for a heat, semi or feature, I think Dery gave him 10 bucks...

Dave the board is still up at NSS in the Pit Office (just on a different wall)... I want to assemble all the records from it and put it on the website when I finish the Historical Section of the site.

      Announcer Dave,
My brother Tweety16 offers the following correction to the TBARA times at Speedworld. He says that Dave Steele was running 11.7/11.8 over several laps, and that low 12 second times are common for the TBARA.

Also, he owns and has restored the 4WD super that has the lap record at New Smyrna. It is shown below in 2004 at Hialeah with Doug Heveron preparing for a race at Oswego.

Here's Tony with the car in the same configuration as when it set the record at New Smyrna... Photo was taken at Miami-Hollywood in early 1976...

Don't know the answer to that, but watching them running a paved VSP during speedweeks years back was absolutely frightening. They had the dynamic top wings that would laydown on the straights, you could see the whole car sink when they popped up. Couldnt imagine what the hell that would feel like diving into the 1st turn at 150. Those dudes needed a sidecar for their cajones.

I just looked at the website for a minute.....they have 35 cars registered. I would love to see NSS offer them a few days of racing during speedweeks. If they could get 15-20 of them to travel down during Feb, i bet they would put on an incredible show and pack the house.

If my brain still works, Super Modified on 5/8 mile Flemington speedway 13.26 around 156 mph AVERAGE. The big deal back then was you got paid for every 10th you took off a track record.

Chassisdude, I seen Rick couple weeks ago.

I am the race director for the Mid West Supermodifieds. There is another group around New York called ISMA.
ISMA ran Volusia in the 90's during speedweeks. Supermodifieds are a wicked race car. We have been kicking around the thoughts of running down south during speedweek. Would love to run NSS. Not sure Robert wants to pay the purse tho.

Chassisdude, Charlie won the big money show at Oswego couple weeks ago.

In my jet wake my friend.......... flying away again.

(Allegiant Airlines, $79.00 dollars each way)

To the land where tires are wider than they are tall- slicks only, no treaded tires, no rules, and no body styles. Running alchohol and methane, burning your eyes, no rules, or limited somewhat. No ABC body styles at all, and drivers that are not afraid of being an ABC bodied wuss. True pilots of machines that can damage and maim.

                          Lookie here--Sept. 26/29---(sat and sun.)

                          Columbus Ohio, and Sandusky Ohio-
                          Columbes a 1/3 mile semi-banked asphalt oval-and Sandusky, a 1/2 high-banked asphlat oval

MSA/ISMA Supermodifieds, and Main Event Outlaw Super Late Models--
Two Nights, and a Big Show to boot, plus heavely filled support classes.
Going to catch both races, and party with all the local, as usual.

If you're a track chaser, or a big fan of this kind of awful-bad-a$$ racing, you'll be there. I will be there, for sure.

Or stay behind and watch a thrilling 5 car limited-late car race for 30 laps at Orlando Speedworld, followed up by the thrilling 3 car Strickly-Stock Feature.

                              missing track records

                              Just so it's noted some were;
Track records seem at times to be dependent on who's keeping them,I know I really had fastest time ever at two tracks before they closed down, one was Naples Speedway in my fireball #4 late modal mod,but looking back can't find it any were. Naples was a very good bunch of guys to race with and had great fun running there when ever Hialeah was rained out or something.
The other was at Florida City Speedway with a mod class mini #4 fast time at 9.97sec. in 1972,I was later banned from the track after running races at other tracks one weekend a mouth[long story]but this made my record time void evidently as next fastest time was then posted many mouths latter as 10.35 done by George Sweeting who was a super good driver but also track prez. at the time.
