  • Auburndale last night

    I made my first appearance at Auburndale last night with my mini stock. I was looking forward to it all week and was not disappointed.

    Gotta hand it to Rex Guy; he is determined! About 5 pm,the sky opened up and poured an inch or two of rain on the track. Although the rain continued for an hour or so, Rex said the weather was clear behind this slow moving cell, and that he WOULD get the show in tonight. I admired his grit and optimism, but I have to admit that I loaded my car up because I was sure we were done for the night.

    Well, Rex G. was right and Rex H. was wrong. The tide went out in the pits and cars dried the track for an hour. The green finally came out at 9:30, so I thought, oh boy, I'll be leaving at 2 am. Not so! Once they got going, the Auburndale staff ran off the races in a hurry. They skipped the heats and didn't spend time on pictures or interviews. I think there were 8 features and they were done by 12!

    I loved driving on that little track. I didn't go very well in the feature, but I had some moments of practice that ranged from perilous or pretty decent. Prior to last night, I can't remember ever spinning out 3 times in practice, (good thing I don't practice much). It was a little different on a 1/4 mile, and its clear that it will take some seat time to get going consistently well there.

    All things considered: I had a blast. My car needed washing anyway, and there were lots of friendly people around to pass the rainy time. I understand there were problems in the pits with the SLM drivers, but we were not even aware of it until reading this board.

    PS: This was the first time my car had been away from the home tracks in 4 years.

    Good job Rex!!
    Yup,Auburndale is fun,it's turns are sharper then most small tracks with a long thin infeild,more so then the old old track it replaced years back,but smooother then bumpville that was the old old one. There was some lost color when the track that is there now was built;
    I kind of really liked the closeline pully deal with the plastic Duck with hole in it's back on the line,to run line-up notes from the tower to the flag stand,the fans would toss as much junk as they could up into that Duck on it's way to the flagstand,and flagman had to try and fine the rite note,was all fun.
    The old tracks flagstand it's self was a plumersnitemare that kind of raddeled as the cars flew by. The nite flag stand fell is another story.
    First few laps I ran the (new)track ever that's there now, man that track was shiny,I was sure something was wrong with my set-up,cus just could not go into turns as fast as it seem needed and stick,tell I fig-ed how small they really were and slowed down some.
    There's more old storys about the old old track if any one likes,ask,I'll shut-up now.
