I made my first appearance at Auburndale last night with my mini stock. I was looking forward to it all week and was not disappointed.
Gotta hand it to Rex Guy; he is determined! About 5 pm,the sky opened up and poured an inch or two of rain on the track. Although the rain continued for an hour or so, Rex said the weather was clear behind this slow moving cell, and that he WOULD get the show in tonight. I admired his grit and optimism, but I have to admit that I loaded my car up because I was sure we were done for the night.
Well, Rex G. was right and Rex H. was wrong. The tide went out in the pits and cars dried the track for an hour. The green finally came out at 9:30, so I thought, oh boy, I'll be leaving at 2 am. Not so! Once they got going, the Auburndale staff ran off the races in a hurry. They skipped the heats and didn't spend time on pictures or interviews. I think there were 8 features and they were done by 12!
I loved driving on that little track. I didn't go very well in the feature, but I had some moments of practice that ranged from perilous or pretty decent. Prior to last night, I can't remember ever spinning out 3 times in practice, (good thing I don't practice much). It was a little different on a 1/4 mile, and its clear that it will take some seat time to get going consistently well there.
All things considered: I had a blast. My car needed washing anyway, and there were lots of friendly people around to pass the rainy time. I understand there were problems in the pits with the SLM drivers, but we were not even aware of it until reading this board.
PS: This was the first time my car had been away from the home tracks in 4 years.
