Disclaimer: this is a negative post. Do not read if you don't like negative posts!

There's been quite a bit of discussion on Jeremy Mayfield and the alleged drug use. Alleged by Nascar. Earlier we had quite a discussion about Carl Long and his penalties for a relatively minor and innocent infraction. A small team that was penalized a huge amount and basically put out of business. This week Martin Truex and team were fined $25,000 and 25 points for an infraction found after the race. Team owners, Earnhardt/Gannassi and crew chief were also fined the same I believe. This is basically a slap on the hand for a huge multicar team. Does anyone else see the inequities here? What is going on with Nascar?

As you've noticed , NASCAR rule infractions are almost always dealt with by the size of the sponsor . As Carl Long and Jeremy Mayfield don't have big , or important , or wealthy sponsors that NASCAR needs the punishments were fairly severe . And of course there are numerous instances of major teams getting caught with major infractions and receiving what amounts to no punishment at all . But the sponsors for those teams spend an awful lot of money in NASCAR , so theres that answer .
We also know that small teams and their owners can be easily made into examples by NASCAR . These guys don't have the money or legal team to fight back .

Regarding the Truex fine , i'm curious about that call . The COT has the tightest template rules in the history of NASCAR . The cars are all inspected ( for several hours each ) before they are even allowed to qualify , much less race . So with all of that extremely carefull measuring with the body templates why wasn't the fender height caught in inspection ? Would the team have altered the fender after qualifying ? Maybe . But that seems like a dumb idea . It seems more likely that Truex was hit at some point during the race and the body work was bowed up slightly . But if NASCAR says they cheated , then they must have cheated .

In the good old days, guys like Curtis Turner and Joe weatherly would show up with terrible hangovers from partying the night before... Yet they raced and also won... Old Curtis was even known to pop a couple of beers during caution flags!... But he sure got Big Bill France mad at him when he tried to organize the drivers into the teamsters union...
