  • Man leasing North Wilkesboro Speedway faces charges

By Monte Mitchell | Journal Reporter

    Published: July 7, 2009

North Wilkesboro - A man leasing North Wilkesboro Speedway was arrested last night on three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense in Wilkes County and on a fugitive warrant from Florida, according to warrants from the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

The fugitive warrant charges Charles Collins Jr. with contracting without a license during an emergency and third degree grand theft, according to Capt. Steve Cabe, the chief of detectives.

Cabe said Collins is also wanted on a fugitive warrant from Georgia, and that local authorities expect to receive that today.

Authorities said the local charges are related to checks Collins made out to race car driver April Myers in the amounts of $1,000, $750, and $245. The checks were to reimburse Myers after she'd paid for a driving school that was to be held at the speedway but was canceled.

Collins wrote the reimbursement checks when he knew there was not enough money in the account to cover the check, according to the warrants. Collins was arrested at about 7:30 p.m. yesterday on the local charges.

Collins was being held this morning on $25,000 bond. A court appearance for the local charges has been set for July 22.

Collins has leased the speedway since February.

I had read about this article on Joe VanHoos' site; I'll bet that Joe knows alot more, seeing that he is on the rebuilding comittee, or something like that.

The article struck me at one point, not quoting, but something to the fact that the local Sheriff Dept. started looking his way, started to take a peek at this guy, because of his delusions of grandeur, his outlandish claims, and his big-bold announcements of awakening this old Raceway.
Seems that only then that they wanted to keep an eye on him, kind of see where he was going to go with this BS.

    And they did just that.

    And nailed he was.

So was he a fugitive from Florida or Georgia ?

both. Georgia hasn't forwarded the paperwork to North Carolina yet so the cops the reporter was talking to didn't yet know what charges he's wanted for there.

because of his delusions of grandeur, his outlandish claims, and his big-bold announcements of awakening this old Raceway.

that seems kind of like somebody down here.
