Hey Mark, I was looking thru the Gov cup program agin and I noticed the '84
'85, '86, and '87 gov's were not there. Is that the years it was at Sunshine?
I remember at least 2 years it was a part of the Triple Crown. At least that was what they called the race at Sunshine. I am going to have to get up in my loft and find some of those Gov cups that I shot. Bob......

Ya Jerr I'll call you in the AM. I am sure you don't want me to call tonight. I am still working. I left out a portion of a piece I was working on today. I had a master made and copies made before I realized my mistake. That hurts, but thank God I found it. I had to redo it, and just got done. If you get a chance call me. 941-322-1019. I will be in my studio all day tomorrow. I have a Rodeo to finish editing. I have to fly out Friday morning for Indiana. I won't be back till Sunday afternoon. I ain't looking forward to the cold weather. No ones racing up there, I can't even take in a race while I'm there. See ya Bob......

Bob, the only information I had for those year's, was listed as "Governor's Cup was Not Contested For"... So I went with that!

Unfortunately, being that I was not down here during that time... It was hard for me to get anymore on that situation to maybe include in the Program...

I'm hoping that next year's is bigger and better...

This year my goal was to get a headshot of EVERY winning Driver... and through the help of Dave Westerman, Jim Fenton, Carol Wicks and a couple others... I was able to accomplish that...

Next year's goal... Pictures of EVERY Winning Car... I think that will be the tough one... but I've got my sights set really high for that Program!

I'm hoping that this year at the tracks especially, I can make some headway with getting some more writers so that we can do some more 'behind-the-scenes' type reporting on a weekly basis and that should help me gain a relationship with some of the drivers involved in the Cup so it should help the program...

Would like to get some more personal, human-interest type stories for it...

Thanks for the kind words in reference to this year's Program... Now it's time to start on the 2008 Issue!

Thank you mark. As I think, 2 of those years what was called the Gov cup was held at Sunshine as part of the tripple Crown. 1 was to be held at Goldengate, but was rained out. In fact the night I wen't to the Gate to tape the Gov cup was the last time I was at the Gate, it closed before I was able to get back agin. Unfortunantly I wasn't a historian then and didn't document any thing. I guess I thought it would be there for ever. Now that I'm old I wish I had of documented more. Sure can't rely on my memory any more.
          Agin thanks Mark. Bob.........

            To Mark...

i tried to email you but my outgoing wont work and i cant fix it... besides i dont care who doesnt like this post...;-)
i have to congratulate you on the program (thank you for sending it)... this has been something ive wanted to do for decades! i try to take photos every week at CCMP with the driver standing to the side of his car# and name over the door. i think it helps people who never meet the drivers to associate the driver with the car during a race. sure made it more exciting for me.
every time i try to do what you did, my work phone rings or something else comes up and i cant make progress. in your case, you have ALOT to do but also have the knowledge of art work etc., you have a sharp young mind, and you have access to things that enable you to create.. i commend you for all you do to help promote racing. talking isnt enough.... we have to make it appealing! we have to make people want to go .....
you have done so much to help promote this sport... you give many many hours, use alot of gas money, create wonderful promotional ideas, and offer help wherever needed. this is what i consider "PROMOTING"... thank you Mark for all you do....BRAVO on your first commemorative program! i will surely keep mine and pass it down to bobby!

              Start here....

Mark, call Jack Smith and ask him for the Governor's Cup program from 1970 something that I gave to him years ago. It has a purple cover and inside are pics and headshots from all the previous winners. Some good stories too.

Keep up the good work, dude.

Hey Mark, do you have any more programs? An old racing Buddy of mine is in my studio and looking at my copy and wants one if you still have them. Jim Kelley, some of you may know him from Saramana, Goldengate, sunshine and Desoto later on. Let me know and I'll send you another check. Thanks Bob..

Triple Crown memory....In the early 70's the third leg(Fla 200 Govenors cup) was held at Golden Gate on Sunday afternoon, on Saturday night the 2nd leg was called the Gulf Coast Classic 125 at Sunshine Speedway. I can't remember which year but I do remember Dick Trickle (at the time the winningest short track driver in America) was in the house, well Jim Fenton put it on them. and after the race Jim pulled into the pits climbed out of his car and dumped a cooler of ice water over his head to cool off, at which time Kenny Faircloth came walking up and with the biggest smile declared "Well we just beat Americas Finest"

Trashin turn4? Jim and I are thinking we should know you. We both remember Fenton and Jimmy remembers Faircloth. I remember the name but I can't put a face with it. E-mail me at flvideo50@hotmail.com if you don't want to devulge your Idenity. Jim was there the time Jim Fenton won 1979. Jim had another name for Jim "Freight train" Fenton. I'd better not say it here. I guess they butted heads a few times. I was in the thros of a divorce at the time. I had to make a choice between racing and her. The rest is history. Give us a shout. Mark - Ditto Bob & Carol on this year's Gov's Cup program. Great job.

Bob - Does this mean I've lost my invitation extended previously to visit CCMP with you some time?

Not at all Jim. We were just havin a little fun. We were talking about names people had in the day. I always figured they could call me any thing cept late for supper. Now I get upset about that. How ya doin Jim? I hadn't head from you in a while. I got a program from the Gov. Cup race a couple weeks ago and your picture is in as winning that race, I think in '78, and we talked to a guy who was there and he told about you pouring a water keg on your head to cool off. This guy e-mailed me and he talked about a guy named Faircloth. Was he on your pit crew? When ever I go off to a race you are welcome to go.
                          Thank Bob..

Bob - LOL, yeah I know I was just pulling your leg on the ride thing man. I laughed when I read the comment about your friend. As is the nature of this sport from the beginning of time, when any car or driver starts doing well and continues to do well for a period of time, racing folks are always fall hard on one side or the other with their opinions. There's none of that middle ground, wishy-washy crap you see in other sports, and that's the way it should be.

In fact, to this day, (and it just happened again yesterday with a crane operator that came out to my jobsite at Canaveral), I still run into people that when I sign a ticket or introduce myself ask; "did you used to drive the FOUR?" Of course my first thought before responding is; "Umm...wonder if he / she was in the bottle throwing crowd or the thumbs-up crowd?". LOL.

We won the Gov's Cup in 1979.

The Faircloth you're asking about is Kenny Faircloth. Kenny is my Brother-in-Law. He, along with my sister actually owned the FOUR.

You can see him in the background hugging my sister after that win in the second picture on a previous post here -http://www.realracinusa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351

That was a great day for us. Can't tell you how many times before then that Trickle had blown into town for a special event when we were winning consistently and made us look like we were tied to a post. Then we finally beat him in the big one, even with my hood up against the windshield the final 20 laps which was really a challenge! (notice in the pic the hood's gone off the car).

Trickle was always a class act with me. I never hesitated to ask him something or even lean over his shoulder when he was working on his Firebird to try to see some tricks and he always answered freely and was very giving of his time. Can't remember ever seeing him without a cigarette in his mouth though. I remember joking with him about his smoking one time and asking if he smoked while he was driving and amazingly he said that he always starts out with one in his mouth! Of course no full-face helmets back then (or at least we hadn't started using them yet) so I wonder what he did after he went to a full-face? LOL

                            Thanks Bob. Take care man.

Hey Jim, I haven't been on here all day. I had to go to the clinic to get some blood work done and then we had a breakfast to go to then I had to load my trailer and go to town and get some plywood for a project at church. Its been a busy day. 10-4 on the bottle throwers or the thumbs up crowd. When I started in the 50's you went in to the pits and kept your helmet to make sure you didn't tick any body off. LOL! There used to be more fights on Sat night than Wed nights at the american legion. Yes I know what you are saying about Trickle. I did a few cable tv shows back in the day and Trickle was on 2 or 3 times. He really is a nice guy. He was always helping young drivers. He was a chain smoker then. He was a clown when he went out.
One of my shows was when Tom Stimus was promoter at Desoto. Tom took us all out to supper after the show. Come to think of it I think Dick Anderson was there too. It was right before a Tripple Crown and Dicky and Dicky were both in town for that. Between the 2 of them the poor waitress was in danger of having a heart attack. LOL! They knew how to enjoy them selves. Trickles car then, was the Coors light ride. Him and his crew came in a open hauler. It was like a roll back cept it didn't roll back. That was before the big stackers. And that was before he signed his cup ride. I always wondered why he didn't get a cup ride earlier in his life. He was always a good driver. But he never seemed to never have a real good car in cup racing. Well gotta see when my wife wants to eat supper. Talk to you later man. Bob....
