You gotta hand it to the staff and racers at CCMP: they realy have endurance! Some teams got there at 9:30 in the morning, and the track raced until 11:30 at night. I'm sure there was still action going on until the early hours. Oh yeah, did I mention it was like 95 degrees all day? I don't know how they do it.
This was a show that started very slowly. There was an injury which resulted in a very long delay, then a Bandelero feature (my opinion on starting the show with Bandeleros is well documented), and a few more races that kind of dragged. BUT when the fireworks started, the pace of things really picked up. The truck 50 lapper and Outlaw Street Stock races were very good, and the sprint feature was outstanding! All of these occurred late in the program however. Some fans had already left by this time; its too bad they didn't get to see the best races.
CCMP gets a pat on the back for addressing one of my pet peeves: grandstand safety. I'm always amazed that some tracks can operate with rotted, breaking timbers for their customers to sit on, and rusted, breaking back supports at the top of the stands. CCMP was ahead of the curve on this: new timbers were installed all around, and everything that I saw was tight and right with the stands.
When someone falls through and gets hurt, the offending track will have to fix things anyway, why not fix them ahead of time?
I got a kick out of Jason the announcer. He cracked a couple of great jokes and has an wild and crazy style of announcing the action. Sometimes, he sounded a little innatentive however. There would be long quiet periods, and almost every line-up sounded rushed. He would not start them until the cars were a half a lap from the green. Overall, he is pretty darn good.
One final comment regarding Tyler Laing in the truck feature. I don't know this kid or anyone on their team, but I do know that they were involved in the biggest dust-up of the night. Did they start it? I don't know, but they were right in the middle of it and were trying to pass the dirtiest driver I've seen for a long time. Anyway, Tyler got black flagged and sent to the pits. I don't know the reason why, but the decision was justified based solely on the behavior of their spotter. Whoever that guy was did a great dis-servive to that team. He was running around in the spotters corrall, cussing, threatening and intimidating other spotters. The last straw came when he insulted and threated the series sponsor. When Tyler was black flagged, this guy was screaming into the radio for Tyler to crash into the car next to him under yellow. Thankfully that didn't happen, but the team did load up and leave. I don't car who that guy is, he does not belong on the radio with a young driver.
I'm not in much of a position to debate this because I am on vacaction and have limited internet access. But I stand by it and I'll be back to normal on Friday.
I counted 113 cars there in 8 classes. It was the 4''th of July, and I had a blast! Hey Bobby, schedule a big race for modified mini stocks this fall.
