  • Who's your NASCAR Hall of Fame choice?

NASCAR is taking nominations for their new Hall of Fame. I watched it on SPEED last night and this is big! What a wonderful tribute!
I can't vote for Tony tho...;-( you have to be retired at least 3 yrs. they better save room tho so he can be there when hes an OLD man!
so far, i think the nominees are ok...
i wish they had a memorial plaque they could put there... I would want Don McTavish to grace that plaque....Don was killed at Daytona in the most horrific accident ever... he was just 22 and his veins ran on racing fuel. Of course i know there are many many who deserve the same honor but that is my choice.
as for the nominations... well I would have gone with....BUGS STEVENS! but can't so i think i will go with BILL FRANCE, SR. the man who made all of this happen! the other 4 i voted for are DALE, Sr., Lee & Richard Petty and Benny Parsons...
Who do you think should be inducted into the NASCAR HALL of FAME?

Bill France Sr., Bud Moore, Junior Johnson, Richard Petty, David Pearson..

The TV show said voting wasn't going to start until the end of July, and the vote button on the Hall's web site takes you to a box called a "Survey". Not sure that means we really voted..

I also see that the fan vote really won't count for much:

"The HOF’s first inductees will be determined by the Voting Panel, which has 50 members – the entire Nominating Committee, 14 media members, four manufacturer representatives, nine retired competitors (drivers, owners, crew chiefs – three each) and two recognized industry leaders. In addition, the fan vote will result in the Voting Panel’s 51st and final ballot."

Things should pretty much be decided before that 51st ballot is cast.

Carol.. you should get contributions and buy a brick and have it engraved in memory of Don.. they really don't cost all that much.. see:

For the initial class I think it should be a no-brainer:

            1. Richard Petty - No need to explain why, he's an obvious choice.

            2. Dale Earnhardt - I personally didn't like him, but just like Petty, no debate on he deserves to be part of the first five.

            3. David Pearson - 2nd most wins and probably the best driver in NASCAR history.

            4. Bill France Sr - Brought organization and stability to what had been up until that time a outlaw sport with many different sets of rules and promoters who would collect the money and disappear before the race was over and not pay the purse.

            5. Bill France Jr - Picked up where his Sr left off and brought the sport to national prominence.

And on a lighter note, Brian France would not be my 6th choice, but his bio would read:

            6. Brian France - Picked up where his dad left off and has done his best to ruin the sport and seems to be doing a great job of it so far.

i wouldn't want the job . how do you pick them

how far back do you go . some of were so good that so many of them have been for got about .. they sure need to remember some of the ones that lost there life racing

i watched a race a while back with Ld ottinger - he was as bad as you can get and if junior johnson had a few more pratice laps look out how about cale - and harry - i would like to see a race like that again

that's a great thing they are doing now what nascar ought to do being as how some of older guys made nascar or helped it get to were it is today

is get off some of there money and share it with some of the older drivers that ain;t as fortunate as some of the drivers are today that win a million dollars or three or four hundred thousands dollars

like back in day 2500.00 to win give them guys a little stock in company i'm sure david pierson - or maybee bobby allison or donnie - maybee junior johnson might could use little extra .. how's that song go show little love nascar spread little sunshine

Since the Hall of Fame will be ongoing with new names being placed every year , why not start at the beginning and let newer names in at a later date . That way , the true pioneers don't get left out in the rush to get the newer ones in . The initial entrants should be the men who started the sport and got it rolling .
                      Bll France Sr.
                      Ralph Moody
                      Red Byron
                      Smokey Yunick
                      Clay Earles
                      Fireball Roberts
                      Junior Johnson
                      Buck Baker
Karl Kiekaefer ( i'm sure i mis- spelled that )
                      Lee Petty
                      More next year .

AJ14 you are absolutely right thats why fan voting should not count for much for the first few years. Most yuppie nascar fans don;t know anyone older than Earnhardt if you asked most of them about Fireball Roberts, Smokey Yunick, Cale Yarborough. Bobby or Donnie Allison and many many more most would go "WHO".

Theres another name that rightfully belongs in the Hall of Fame , though i don't expect to see it any time soon . Bruton Smith . track owner from 1960 , major part of why Nascar succeeded .

for what it's worth. Red Byron 1st winner, champion.Richie Evans multiple modified winner and champion.Big Bill France for obvious reasons.David Pearson did the most against Petty's bigger budget.Glenn"Fireball"Roberts there is no telling how far he could have gone, winning 33 races of 207.
