I noticed Volusia and Columbia posted articles on the site stating they were not racing this weekend to allow track employees and everyone else to enjoy the 4th of July with their families or doing whatever they want. Why don't they just come out and say because of the night race at Daytona we can't go up aganist that. Allowing track employees the 4th of July off to spend with their families was not done before 1998, the first year Daytona switched to a night race. I remember pre-1998, the 4th of July, or the Saturday closest to the 4th was a huge racing weekend at New Smyrna, Volusia, Desoto and many other tracks in the area.

Daytona may be part of it but it was given off for the employees, fans and drivers to spend time with their families on the 4th of July. I work for Volusia and appreciate having the 4th off to be with my grandson who will be here that day. New Smyrna is racing tomorrow and Orlando has Crash-A-Rama Friday night. Putnam moved to Friday night and Charlotte is racing Saturday but I really don't remember any track running against Daytona.
I remember one year New Smyrna had an enduro race the same day as the Pepsi 400 and I went there before going to Daytona. They were expecting a large number of cars and I think 17 showed up and that was the year I believe that Todd McCreary was hurt. I was there to score for one of the drivers but with so few cars, they did not need individual scorers.
I know Rusty at Monroe in Lousiana even closed his track on the 4th so his staff could enjoy the events in town that day. He said there was so much more going on that he gave everyone the night off. And Lanier is running on Friday night this week so their people can be off the 4th. So it really isn't just Columbia and Volusia, it is alot of tracks also doing the same thing.

Putnam ran last year back to back with Daytona and had what was probably their biggest crowd of the year, but it was not directly on July 4th. They originally had scheduled racing for the 4th this year but moved it to Friday after numerous complaints from racers who had family plans.

Golden Isles is offering July 4th racing along with fireworks, chicken and rice and bannana puddin. NLMS and more will be there with their latemodels and all the regular divisions will be running as well. Nothing better than a pit full of Dirt Cars and Fireworks. See you at the Track.Randy Kerr
