  • good nite at NSS

good races good car count and lots of spectators (we didnt even need to have the charlie daniels band to do it either).

    wingless sprints were there too.

how is it that sprint cars have been around for 100 years and nobody has yet to figure out how to put a clutch and starter on one? (and dont give me the "its tradition to push start the cars")

I was also suprised to see that the catch fence will keep a car in between the walls.

I quit fishing because there was no one handing out money at the docks when i got back. Why did you quit racing?

14 Started... The 'Wingless' Sprints were making their debut at the track tonight and put on a good show...

David Slawiak #79 took the win... Keith Butler #19 was closing on him with about 5 to go when he went very high in turns 3 & 4, hitting the wall hard before barrel rolling a few times... was quick a sight... but the good news was Butler was okay!

Slawiak says he still had a little something left in the car for when Butler caught him... guess we'll have to wait until next time...

It was a joy having that whole crew back there tonight, especially Wild Child!

All in all a good night at NSS!

Oh yeah... and not a DROP of Rain all night!

The reason they don't run clutches is the acceleration factor. With a clutch and flywheel they will not rev/accelerate as fast. They also do not run a balancer/damper on the front of the engine either. The water pump is driven off the end of the crank snout in most cases. The dry sump/fuel pump/steering pump is driven off the camshaft in either the front or rear of the engine. Without a flywheel a starter is useless. Plus it's un-neccerary weight. Just like there is no battery, weight. Now the Silver Crown cars do run a clutch and starter, but no onboard battery. If it stalls out on the track, it's pushed off like a typical Sprint car.

The difference between winged sprints and non-wing is pretty dramatic. Although they are slower than the TBARA cars, they are still fast and the fact that they slide around so much made them pretty interesting. The certainly looked more dangerous, especially considering that many of the drivers in last nights field are still learning sprints...and it showed in some cases.

They did have an excellent battle brewing for the lead in the last 6 laps. Its too bad that Keith Butler flipped; it would have been neat to see that one play out.

At OSW, the PRI races demonstrated that the non-wing cars can't pass there, but they did much better at New Smyrna last night. It has to be due in part to the uniformly high quality of cars at the PRI show, while last nights field had much more of a difference between fast and slow cars.

Overall, I though NSS had the best night I've seen there in 2009. Racing in all classes was interesting, and it didn't end at 9:30!

Too bad TBARA had to schedule on the same night... probably would not have made much of a difference though... 14 cars is NOT a good field... especially at a track the size of NSS... To bad the egos have to be put ahead of a quality racing program...

If you want to see the TBARA drivers without wings, you pretty much have to go to a CFWS show, due to the politics and all.

FYI - Bo Hartley won the TBARA race.

It was a good night of racing. The trucks put on a pretty good show. And I like the USAC style of sprint car racing... Hey how about a wingless show at Bronson? That would be neat.
