    ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD RAINED OUT (06/05/09)

We thought we dodged the bullet this week, but yesterday's rain proved to be just to much for Orlando Speedworld so we have canceled racing for tonight 06.05.09.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and look forward to seeing you next Friday for the first Bright House Challenge Series - Super Late Model race of 2009 at the 3/8th mile bull-ring.

Not wanting to sound like a smart ass , but what exactly does a heavy rain on the day before a race have to do with having to cancel . Now for a dirt track its obvious of course , but an asphalt track just needs an hour or so to dry out , usually with the sun and / or the wind . Are the pits too wet ? Is the infield flooded ? Would the racers be happy to work around the water in the pits and infield ? Does it really make that big of a difference if both are flooded ? Is the parking lot for the fans the concern ? I'm just curious because Orlando seems to often be the first track to cancel because of rain .

And what needs to be done for drainage if it really is underwater , and why hasn't it been done . I'm just concerned about OSW surviving , and if its that easy to rain out a show there , we'll likely lose it to a developer .

Osw has very poor drainage. The track will seep water for days after a heavy rainfall.

        Seconding what EDM said.

OSW gets weepers in a bad way, especially down in turn three. I remember one particularly painful night of trying to watch a Sunbelt Series race and the first class of cars to try and race a heat (modifieds I think) went spinning off into turn four. It hadn't rained a drop all day, but it did during the week leading up to Friday. Then came 1-2 hours worth of attempts to dry out that area.

Well... Was thinking about going to the Powell Memorial after the Strategic OSW "rain-out" for tonight... Then... looked at the radar... The Ocala area is already getting pounded by some really bad storms... nasty looking stuff... Ain't looking good...

Also the weather this afternoon is predicted to be the same as yesterday. And if that is the case it will be bad on that side of Orlando. 3" yesterday around 5:00.

Alot of it goes back almost three weeks... that 7 days of straight rain really hurt things and it has not really had time to drain out of the ground completely... add to that all the afternoon storms passing right over the track... with more on the way today...

Would hate to see guys tow all the way there just to be told to go home!

in Fla, i think Ocala is the only other Fri show.

as far as Sunday goes, you can't run very late Sun night due to people having to get up for work. which means starting early in the afternoon. think, 4pm, 98% humidity, 99 degree heat and the sun doesn't go down for another 4 hours in August.

on the plus side, you should sell a lot of beer.

running on Sunday also doesn't do much about the weepers on the track.

Sunday would be all right for a winter series down here, not for the summer.

aside from them actually having AC in their cars, as Old Racer pointed out to you, it's not about the racers you nitwit. racers are dumb enough, we'd probably show up for it.

i'm talking about how hard it would be to put people in the grandstands for a weekly show with no shade.

Slinger starts about 6pm but they've got their act together. they get out around 10pm. and Wisconsin tends to be much cooler for much more of the summer than Florida.
