  • New Late Model serie in the state

There seems to have a good bunch of people with real racing knowledge here on this forum. Why not gather a couple of those to build a good running, top notch asphalt serie? Many of you seems to have experience in the trend, why not do it?

    Go ahead, let's hear it!!!

Share your thoughts on the subject.

I still wonder if touring series are even a good idea anymore . Many tracks are just scraping by , they couldn't afford to bring in a touring series . And the only model that ever really made sense for a series was the original ASA . I'm not sure you could come up with something that would rival that one .
That being said , i don't think that the current ASA ( any of them ) is heading in the right direction , some series that look like they might be a good idea are only small regional ones and don't travel far enough to show people what they can do . Remember , the original ASA was almost a nationwide series at one point . Just concentrating on Florida though , you could probably get enough tracks on board to start , just have to drop the sanctioning fees and memberships lunacy until you get established . And don't try to hose only one major sponsor . Get 10 smaller sponsors to pay the bills . And not race tire or race fuel companies , they've been squeezed too much already . They write checks , but they have to get their money back by charging high prices and forcing racers to use their products . Go with furniture companies , beer companies , soft drink companies .
Then of course you have to have a rules package . If you have a touring series with enough cars , you don't have to worry about your rules matching the local tracks . Then you could be creative . And first, NO CRATE MOTORS . Thats a rule that never really worked , and i think watered down racing in the eyes of the fans . ASA was the first to let themselves be talked into crate motors , and look where they ended up .

I don't think another touring series is a good idea. Finally, Desoto and Charlotte seem to be having good car countin late models. A touring series will kill that. And to AJ14, crate motors do work. Look into the ACT series and Thunderroad Speedbowl

362CU in, 1 carburaetor(any size), no body rules, 2700 lbs (50 lb break for ABC body), no traction control, run what ya brung. Bring back the ingenuity of racing.

You can only buy two tires per race. 75 lap races. Invert field from previous race finish for heats. 10 lap heat races determine line up for feature. Double File restarts (leader chooses inside or outside). 1 hour of practice. Then rotate in local classes practice.

Payout - $5 per lap run on track for feature and heat. Feature payout - $500 bonus for winner. $100 lap leader money for lap 10, 20, 30, 40 etc... $100 for hard charger. $500 bonus if you start shotgun and win.

If the winner won from the pole (lets hope not) he would take home $1625.00
If you finished last and ran all of the laps you would take home $425.00
$250 for tires, $75 for race fuel, $50 entry fee

If the faster cars end up starting in the middle of the pack, it would give other cars a chance to make some lap money until the better cars "worked their way through the field passing cars". It makes cars RACE and pays enough to possibly break even for the night which would bring more cars to the track if you run all of the laps and not start and park.

Thats not bad Fred , not bad at all . Throw in completely inverted starts for all races and you've got a winner . And open tire rules of course . Rules dictate the maximum width and hardness , racers buy the brand of their choice from the dealer of their choice .

            Fred,
Interesting concept on the payout. I've never heard of anything like it before. I like it. I do think the rules may need some tweaking as I'm not sure a "run what you brung" series would bring all the cars you need. Suggest giving weight breaks but whatever works is fine by me. Just afraid that money being spent would hurt the little guys still. Well done though, and hope someone tries your payout idea and inverted starts.

You will just further fragment the limited amount of cars available and make for small fields. This is why racing in this state is the way it is.

Fred, Interesting concept and the payout is step tward where it should be. that'll make the lower budget guys race just as hard and every week.

AJ, I agree........someone needs to take this idea and run with it.

Winger, don't give weight breaks, make pages of rules, the fastest money or set-up will be out front. There is a possibility the hardest fought race could be for 3rd 2 laps down.

Noone wants follow the leader but still wants rules to keep the cars together?

Now if the rules kept the cars 2 and 3 wide swapping positions the entire race i'd go for that as well.

The fast guys will be racing and trying to race (throug) the slower cars who are racing each other just as hard.

sounds like a heck of a show if it would be put together.

this is like it was back when my dad raced.

In this i'm not talking about all divisions.........this would make a great statewide traveling series.

Normalcy is a myth. what is perfectly normal for the Cheetah, Becomes absolute chaos for the Antelope.

I actually read about some track trying this pay per lap at a track up north I think? It was in Circle Track a while back.

Bossman, I am not sure why you think this would fragment the cars. It is open to every SLM, LLM or ASA car. If you take a typical 2 barrel motor and changed the cam and put a bigger carb on it it would make quite a bit more HP.
Winger, I think the only weight break should be for the ABC Body becuase there are so many of them now. Possibly for a steel head motor because of the weight on the front. My goal is to make everyone get creative again with the bodies and motors and keep it easy and fair for anyone. It costs 30-40K to build a 9:1 motor. You can build a 650-750HP motor for about 15K with pop ups and bigger carbs. The only track that a big motor will have a real advantage would be NSS.

The rest of the rules would be the typical SLM rules that everyone around the country run as far as chassis or motor set back etc...

THis is something that someone would have to announce 5 or 6 months in advance and would probably take a year to get cranked up completely. I know every other SLM series or track is running ABC bodies now but most teams have two cars or there is a weight break for the boring bodies.

GREAT rules and payout. run the shows on a Wednesday night. ONE CLASS. Pill draw for heats. USE ASCS Passing points to make the main event.
If that is to hard to do then run heats, consy and REDRAW for the main. Double wide starts in all races except the last 10 laps of the main. LIMIT the main to 25 laps.
Use a hardness on the right rear and just race liske we did in the old days of the modifieds. This tare dwon and protest is a bunch of junk anyway. If we got out run we just brought a bigger gun to the fight next time.
Run once a month (12 races) get 4 tracks in the game and go race.

There is a lot of good ideas for a series. I would like to see outlaw style bodies or dirt latemodel. They are both cheap I think under a grand. I like the run what you brung maybe limit cubic inch size other then that let them eat.

Just to stir the pot and the imagination a little , theres no reason that a modified series couldn't be started using the same type of rules package . Run what you brung , 14 inch wide tires , same idea for payouts .

AJ, Don actually tried to open up the body rules a little last year in the mods. I liked the idea of the side panels and wings etc...THe only problem was that there were three classes of modifieds. THe "Florida" mods that we have now could not put on bigger tires the way they are now. THe stock spindles and suspension wouldn't last to long. I would like to see them go to an SK type mod and use the chassis type cars like the northern mods. THe SK's are the same as the Nascar mods but run 2 barrels and a gear rule I think. It would also add some cars for speedweeks.THere are more and more of them available now since the Whelen tour started running in the carolinas.
Again, if they would open up the rules and leave them alone things would get better in just about every class.
