  • Thunder Road car count this week end

So I guess the economy is no excuse over there:

    Thunder Road

    Late Models 40
    Mods 25
    Tigers 40
    Street Stocks/Warriors 59

    Total 164 in the pits

I was just reading in "Speedway Illustrated" that, historically, recessions have been boom periods for racing. Hmmmmmm, there goes that excuse. Also, an interesting survey on how your local track is doing is in the magazine.

I note that Thunder Road only has 4 classes with that many cars also.

Hmmm. only four classes and 164 cars in the pits that says something to me loud and clear. CUT BACK ON THE NUMBER OF CLASSES and you might get a decent car count. Not too hard to figure out or maybe its just me.

I hope all those cars got to race. B mains and so on..........those are good numbers.
Normalcy is a myth. what is perfectly normal for the Cheetah, Becomes absolute chaos for the Antelope.

a friend of mine from down here moved to Indiana to race . I can't remeber the name of the track but the night i saw had 4 classes Sportsman (37 cars) Street Stocks ( 41 cars) Sportsman figure 8 (33 cars) Street Stock figure 8 (31 cars). 4 classes is all they had and of these cars only around 12 total cars ran both oval and figure 8.

Not to mention that Thunder Road is a THURSDAY night track... another example of what "won't work", yet proven false.

            Economy is NOT the problem.

Thunder Road is an awesome place. Pure electricity. I have crewed on multiple cars there from the ACT Late Models to Busch North races. I'll give you some honest insights about the place and why it wouldn't work in FL

1.T-Road is in the middle of nowhere, which is a help. Down here, we have plenty to keep us busy.

              2. Racing season is much much shorter.

              3. I am a big fan of the promoter Tom Curley. He is a constant and rules with an iron fist. He is race control from the tower. I can only see what would happen down here. "Blank you, we ain't ever comin back, we're putting our blank on the trailer and going elsewhere". The typical FL racing mentality that we never hear up north.

              4. Tech is iron clad, and penalties are serious. The racers know better than to even try.

Everything about the place is run right. I flew up for the MilkBowl last year to help a buddy with an ACT Late Model and I think 56 showed up to try to qualify. We had time trials, then heats, then a last chance feature. The Late Models run ZZ4 crates like the trucks down here, run spec shocks, and 8 inch slicks. They are fully tubed and built like a super, limited, ASA, etc. But they look every bit like a late model and put on a hell of a show. They are affordable so many can play, but the cream still rises. They are running a race at Loudon this year too. Bottom line, that place has it down. The staff is sharp as a tack or you won't last. There are no dragging things out, everything goes off precisely on schedule. Even the food is awesome and reasonably priced, and I think a weekly show is $10 bucks or so. Of course, down here, we don't get enough fans to make it that cheap and keep the door's open. Then again, he doesn't have to pay out what you would to a SLM either. It all comes full circle and goes hand in hand.Tom Curley does it right, and will not put up with the crap that I see go on down here. But it is what it is, a if you want to operate a track in FL, I think it is inherently more difficult and would even be for Mr. Curley.
