  • Ms. Peggy at New Smyrna Speedway

It is with a very sad heart that I have to inform everyone that Ms. Peggy passed away this week. Thanks to Barbara Pierce who sent me an e-mail informing me of Ms. Peggy's passing. Peggy was a fixture at New Smyrna Speedway for many, many years and would occasional help out at Orlando SpeedWorld. There will be no services since her wish was to be cremated.

I knew Peggy for many, many years and you never saw her without a smile on her face. As long as I can remember, you could count on her being at the track every Saturday night and until his death, with her husband Dan at her side. She would bring little goodies to the tower people and loved to share them. Robert Hart, Don Nerone, Terry Roberts have all enjoyed Peggy's treats.

I know in the last few years Peggy has become a cat woman like me. First taking in one and then having a bunch of kittens but she loved them all just as I am sure they adored her.

Alex and I both will never, never forget Ms. Peggy. But she is now with Dan and it is his gain and our loss but heaven couldn't have a better person in it than Peggy. We love you Peggy and you will always be in our hearts.

You are right Dave and she was the sweetest lady. Oh, she would get mad sometimes if someone made more noise in the tower than they should be and Ms. Peggy would let them know it. But she was the last of Clyde's original people and she loved her racing. I never Peggy in the tower without getting a big hug and how are you? Then we would talk cats since she knew I was a "cat" woman also.

I know how much she really missed Dan since his passing and she would tell you she was sad. I just hope now she is happy and with Dan and watching over alot of us. And those of us who worked with Peggy and loved her, will always think of her and miss her.

I am suppose to go to NSS tonight to write the 50 lap Modified race but I think I will write from the pit grandstands since I am not sure I am ready to be in the tower without Ms. Peggy there. Just not ready for that yet and Alex has decided that he is just too sad to go with me tonight. Ms. Peggy would have him running up and down the stands taking results for her and sometimes slipping him a dollar or two behind my back. I was never there without her asking me about Alex and how he was.

Bill Posey was very sad to hear of Peggy's passing but said the last time he saw her, he thought she was ready to be with her Dan. Maybe that is true but I hope she knows just how much she was loved by many of us down here. My heart is sad because she is gone but overjoyed that she is with her Dan and watching over alot of us. And someday, we will meet again.

          Remembering Ms. Peggy

I spent two years announcing at New Smyrna Speedway and doing the FASCAR This Week TV show and Ms. Peggy always made it a better day/night. She always went out of her way to watch the program and would always provide little pointers and inside stories. She usually controlled the control tower in a quiet, but stern way. Too much commotion and she would let you know. She was always interested in your family and you would have to fill her in or she wouldn't be satisfied. She saw a lot of people come and go but she would always make you feel as if you were one of her favorites. She was the "go-to" person for racing history, driver history, or for Clyde's "good 'ol days". Efficient, dependable, always going out of her way to do more than her job, the racing folks on both sides of the catch fence were her extended family. She lived for racing nights and we just couldn't get started until Ms. Peggy was there. The tower will never be the same.

My suggestion is that though she wanted no service, New Smyrna Speedway should still do a memorial race, service, or something to honor her dedicated service to all racers. She has counted probably over a million laps of competition and could tell you stories about nearly all of them. Please reply to this post with ideas.

One thing is for sure. They now have a Master Scorekeeper up in Heaven and the ones with the biggest smiles are Clyde and Dolly Hart, as well as her beloved husband Dan.

Rest in Peace, Ms. Peggy . . . and don't be too hard on them up there!

As Roland also knows, Ms. Peggy could and would rule the tower and she was not afraid to tell people to be quiet or they were not suppose to be in there. Many a time she made people make room in the tower for me when I was writing and would tape my name to a place so I would have room in the tower. She would let you know if you made a mistake and she always, always cheered for David Rogers. She loved David and watching him race.

Yes, Peggy was up there in years but she still did her job and whatever was needed of her. She was just a good lady and will be sadly missed.

              Good By Dear Friend

What a great void in our racing family. I first ran into Peggy, Dan, and her brother Buck Holder in the fall on '66. Peggy was the head scorer at Deland Raceway Park. Dan drove Buck's wrecker at the races on Saturday nights. Buck built race cars that ran locally as well as at Nascar Sportsman races. These great people took in this kid from Michigan and made me fell like family. I'am very saddened at this time, but I can't help thinking of all the great times we had together, both at the track and in the Keys. There are many people from all over the U.S. that will miss Peggy, not only from Speedweeks but also from the Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge, where Peggy , Dan, and Buck went fishing for many decades. God Bless old friends you back together again. In loving memory your friend Fred

Miss Peggy and her brother Buck had been friends of our family for years. My brother Wayne began his racing and building cars with Buck. He was at the age that Buck had to sneak him into the race tracks. When he came to OSW or NSS he always made a point of seeing Peggy and Dan. Peggy was one of the finest ladies I know. She did have her favorite and always made her way down in the pits to see "Her David". Peggy will be missed, but know that Clyde and Dolly have started their own racetrack in heaven and now they have their scorer. She would have never given up on coming to that racetrack...her heart and soul were there for the Harts, the racers and her friends. God Bless you Peggy and thank you for watching over us.
