Check out this incredible photo of Art Atkinson being thrown from his Jalopy racer at Ascot Park... By the way, he wasn't hurt...
As a point, Ascot Park used to run a wide variety of shows... Jalopies, Figure 8s, CRA Sprint Cars, Flat Track Motorcycles, Motocross etc.
If you ever saw any of their promoting, they emphasized the crash and bang elements of their show and they played to huge crowds because of that...
Not to say that's truly the way to promote, but I remember the posters that used to be everywhere around Orlando in the 60s that promoted Orlando Raceway... Simple and to the point:
AUTO RACES
FRIDAY NIGHT 8:30
ORLANDO RACEWAY
SEE 8 BIG RACES!
In the middle was an artist rendering of two cars crashing into each other...
everything was in black and white except the ORLANDO RACEWAY which was in red...
Some points here... these posters were everywhere... gas stations, car repair shops, restaurants, telephone poles... They were BIG and easy to read... Note they didn't even give the location of the track... You'd figure it out anyway... Also note the use of AUTO RACES rather than STOCK CAR RACES... Dick Joslin once told me the general public really has no idea what a stock car is, but they do know what an auto race is...
Last year, Speedworld had a poster they put out for one of the races, not sure which one... Mark did an awesome job on it, but it was so "busy" and most of the type was so small, that you could easily pass it by... there was nothing that stood out to "grab" you...
On well, enough race track promoting... time to get back to work...
