Former Nationwide Series Regular Kevin Grubb Dead At 31

Kevin Grubb, a former regular in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, was found dead on Wednesday at a hotel just outside of Richmond, Va., according to a report on ESPN.com.

Grubb, of Mechanicsville, Va., was 31 years old.

At the time of his death Grubb was suspended from competing in NASCAR sanctioned events because of his refusal to submit to a drug test in September 2006 following an event at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

Grubb made his Nationwide Series debut at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 1997.

He made 174 Nationwide Series starts from 1997-2006. After two part-time seasons for his family owned team in '97 and '98, Grubb was hired by Brewco Motorsports to compete in the Nationwide Series in 1999. His 13th place finish in the standings for Brewco in 2000 was a career best.

He went to Team Bristol Motorsports for the 2002 season but issues plagued the team and he finished 19th in the standings.

In March 2004 Grubbs failed a NASCAR mandated drug test and was suspended indefinitely by the sanctioning body. He was reinstated by NASCAR in 2006 and returned to compete in the Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series.

He made five Nationwide Series starts and four Truck Series starts before he was again suspended by NASCAR. On September 11, 2006 Grubb crashed on the second lap of a Nationwide Series event at Richmond and refused to take a NASCAR mandated drug test after the accident.

The day after the event Grubb claimed that he had no memory of refusing the test because of a concussion sustained in the crash.

Grubb had 10 top-5 finishes and 32 top-10's over his career in the Nationwide Series. In eight career Camping World Truck Series starts he never finished in the top-10. Grubb never made a start in the Sprint Cup Series.

According to the ESPN.com story, Grubb was discovered at the Alpine Motel just outside of Richmond at 11:30 a.m. The cause of death was not released but no foul play was suspected.

Ron - I appreciate the compliments, and believe me there's no disrespect meant here, however due to the point of this thread being the unfortunate passing of this young driver, it would be in-appropriate to carry this subject any further on this thread IMO.

        Thanks again,
        JF

No sympathy here for drunks or addicts who overdose or get dui's. Just like that Cameron Dodson kid, play with fire it's going to burn you.

Overdosing on drugs is very hard to feel sympathy towards.

Suicide, on the other hand, is very troubling to me. It takes a lot of torture on your mind to contemplate such an action. I can't imagine what goes through the human mind that suicide and ending it all seems to be a better alternative to the life you're living. Not to mention the torture that all the survivors will go through. Suicide is a VERY selfish act. The only one whose pain has ended is Kevin's.

Either way, there are 2 parents out there that lost someone they love, no matter which way his life has ended. Keep the family and friends in mind while crucifying his action, whether it was drugs, alcohol or suicide.

If it was your kid, I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear about what a fool your kid was.

I dealt with people that were on the verge of suicide and the families of some that completed the deed. People don't "Usually" think,, hey, I am going to commit suicide and the hell with everyone else... "Most" times, they have suffered so badly and so long they see suicide as the only way to stop the hurting. And in many cases, those left behind probably couldn't have handled the pain as long as the deceased did. I actually had a client once that I don't think he had any choices left.. he had been in pain for many many years, had received all sorts of help/assistance, couldn't go backwards, forwards or sideways... IMO, he was out of options and I felt relief for him when I got the news... I knew his pain was over. His family also realized they could not have handled the pain as long as he did.

Fraz was correct on one issue.. there are parents and family members of this young man that are hurting and struggling with the loss of someone close to them. The event is something they will most likely never understand, but I hope they get some assistance in one form or another to help them move on.

                  Please

Let us all just say a prayer for Kevin and his family. This is not a subject that should continued on as a story. This is a sad story for Kevin as we must never know how much pain he must of been in and his family. God Bless them all. They will need the help.
                  Sincerely,
                  Joanne

The young man was obviously troubled and I feel a great deal of sympathy for his family and friends no matter what the circumstances. It totally blows my mind that people can sit there and judge other peoples lives when they know nothing about the people involved.I wish the best for those he left behind and hope his loved ones don't hear any comments like the ones that some have posted here.

Well said Bob. I was told years ago that the definetion for suicide was 'a permanent solution to a temporary problem'. Medical would be the exception I guess. Been close myself.

Having gone through this myself, I really feel for the family. My father committed suicide almost 13 years ago and you never get over it. You think you are helping yourself but don't think about your love ones finding you. My mother found my father dead in the bathtub, he used a gun and that is all I will get into because of the gory details. He did have health problems but he had them for as long as I can remember.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this time.

                            Drs.

i have a couple of friends whos drug addiction started in the doctors office. they hand them out like candy. it isnt fair to judge anyone who has addictions. it isnt fair to judge anyone period. they have enough suffering and when a man 31 years old cannot tolerate his life there is something extremely painful he is suffering.
almost every single kid i know has been diagnosed with ADHD and they are on mind altering drugs. these are little kids who have no say on what goes into their bodies...some of them are just normal kids who have alot of energy... we need to learn how to focus their energy... not cover it up...
its a major problem that wont stop because there is far to much money involved. your dr. can give you a scrip for oxy... costs a few cents at the drug store... maybe a couple of dollars... on the streets the same pill gets about $60... 30 pills at $60 ... in times of desperation its an easy buck ... its also a way for someone who cant deal with the pressures and pain in their lives to escape for awhile. unfortunately its alot harder to stop than they realize...
is it fair to judge ? no... it is fair to pay attention to your kids and friends whos personalities change.. who have suffered trauma... i have been trying to stay off the message boards but i have been to funerals of people i loved who decided to stop the pain...it hurts... so now i try to pay attention and help... not judge.
we have all sinned... sometimes we get caught and sometimes we dont... but we ALL sin!
