  • opening night...1970!

Here is something a little different.

One of the Florida City veterans, Don Winchester, has written the first installment in his wonderful account of racing in another time, and in a vastly changed world. He was in the pits when the Florida City Speedway opened under new management, and after a tragic accident. There is no other description of the track that is as detailed and interesting as this one. It is some fascinating Florida racing history.

Thanks for the cool link. I knew Don in the early 70's and I tried to email him using the address he posted a while back on the sites guest book. "Undeliverable" , according to my service. If you have an email address for him that you could forward to me (or mine to him) I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

Wow! Outstanding! I think I was only around 5 years old when I made my only trip to Florida City Speedway. Mr. Winchester resurrected images in my head that had not been processed for over 3 decades. I'm thankful that my dad took me to the races on that long lost day of times past. I'm also thankful that I spent last Friday at Road Atlanta, with my dad, creating new memories.

Seminole, You might not realize it, but your one lucky man. I was born in 70' but it was my dad who got me into racing. Never went to Florida city but I did get to MANY tracks here in Florida. The reason I say your lucky is because this July 1st will be 5 years since I lost my dad and you still have yours so cherish everyday you have with him. Trust me on this one.

On a lighter note, Most days I'm glad he got me into racing, but other days I wished he wouldn't had. I raced years ago and for the last 10 years my son has ran karts. Now it's time for a race car. Some days my checking account is not to happy!!!...LOL [ neither is momma ]

I was stationed at Homestead AFB in the summer of 1974 and got a chance to catch some of the final shows at Florida City... Although it was pretty run-down by then, the racing wasn't too bad... Pretty cool time for me... Go to west Palm on Friday, Hialeah Saturday and Florida City on Sunday afternoon...
