  • We Lose Another One...

Manzanita Speedway, known as one of the fastest half-mile dirt tracks in the world, will be closing its doors April 11, 2009 after years of legendary racing. The facility has been sold and according to the speedway the facility will no longer be operating as a race track. The track is located just outside of Phoenix, Arizona and there are homes and commercial properties surrounding the facility - making the land valuable to developers... sad.

Boy , what a history that place has . I hope something changes and it stays a race track , but probably not . I imagine it will be a commercial development since there is a big auto salvage yard located off of turn three .
I'd sure hate to see it turn out like USA international , close the track and then it just sits empty because no one can aford to develop it .

I guess they didn't advertise enough on the KARNAC board.

J/K. Its a shame to lose such a racy place. It was a wonderful stage for dirt racing, and for the sprints in particular.

Yea, tracks are dropping like flies anymore. They are far more valuable as something else than a racetrack. That is why you need to support your local track whenever you can or maybe one day, it will be something else also.

WOW! This is a blow to the Copper Classic on dirt and sprint racing...I talked to a guy a week or two back who has been working in the Phoenix area and he said the outskirts of Phoenix is like a ghost town because of the economy. Doesn't make sense.

Dam shame. I read that a crane company bought it and the owners bought the track back in 07' for 2.5 mil and sold it to the crane company for 10 mil !!!
              Alot of history at Manzy.

NICE idea BUT it is like AIG Bailout money he is not giving it back, FOR SURE.

The only way to EVER keep a track open FOREVER is to have a land usage clause written into law that says that the land can ONLY be used for Motorsports events, NEVER HAPPEN in this day and age.

I just saw a 1 hour replay of the Copper on Dirt Sprint and Midget races from Manzanita . The races were back in Feb. of this year . The races were on the VS channel which is also going to televise the IRL races this year . I havn't been to Manzanita in many years but it sure brought back memories . A really great dirt track , it's very wide and smooth . Anyway , it's good show from a track that will certainly be missed . The telecast will probably be repeated a couple more times .
