  • What a Race!

What a great race last night at Daytona Municipal Stadium! The AMA Flat Track racing was amazing. Two and three wide all night long...First & second swapped the lead a couple times in the closing laps of the feature. The night's fast qualifier had to take a provisional for the feature then raced all the way to a 3rd place finish...These guys & gals are absolutely NUTS!

It was the best $20 I've spent in a while. I'm thinking about going again tonight. They have an autograph session in the pits from 6 to 7:30. The racing starts at 8. They were done at 10:30.

I went a couple years ago and really liked the show. The night I was there, passing was more difficult and they were certainly not 2 and 3 wide, but that is the hit or miss nature of dirt racing. It was fun anyway.

      WOW!!! Memory's!!!

Way back in the year of 1968 I can remember going there as a young lad. There were over 150 plus riders in my class alone. 250 cc pro. It was unreal You had to be in the top two to move to the next round. I won like 3 rounds and 5 or 6 seconds and got tangled up in the round going to the main. I was pissed, but amazed that I realy got that far. There was a heck of a lot of GREAT riders. Billy Kid won I think he was also on a Bulatco. We were both Works Riders. I can only imagine what it would be like today. Thanks for hicking the dust out of my brain. Memory of that era is fun!!!!! Wonder if Andrew Dunn was their back in 68. GOD sound like a Bruce Springstene song. "Back in 68" ot something like that.

The Municipal Stadium shows have always been one of the best of Bike Week . In fact the midget races they used to have there during Speedweeks was also a pretty good show . I've been to several flat track motorcycle shows there , got to watch the great Jay Springsteen in action a couple of years ago . But for some reason , even though Jim France promotes the Flat Track races , word of mouth seems to be the only form of advertising for it . Every year when i plan my Daytona trip i try to get info on the races , but never have much luck . Even the local paper doesn't ever have much info on it .The racing is way to good to keep it such a secret .
But then that stadium doesn't hold all that many people , so maybe thats why they don't bother hyping it .

AJ the place was packed on both sides last night. It was some crazy racing...It seems the reason Joe Kopp was so fast Wednesday night he had filled the rear tire with water to help with traction. Daytona Motorsports Group outlawed that Thursday. But Kopp was still fast... Here's my question / complaint. If this is the best of the best why did DMG make them switch to motocross 4 strokes? It takes away Harley Davidson for one and part of being the best of the best and a travelling national series is the ingenuity the racers put into it...Once again Francecar has brought parity to racing!...I heard they ran some speedway bikes Sunday. That would have been COOL to see.

The France family makes no changes that don't benefit them personally . My guess is that the rules change was more the result of a promise of bigger sponsor checks by a manufacturer , than to even out the competition . Dumping decades of tradition to put more money in the bank is the France mantra .

Bobby, I wasn't there in '68 but I did run there in the mid '70s. The municipal stadium was almost always a one groove track. The surface is made of coquino(sp) rock We always ran a race at Volusia. The racing was better there. During bike week we would run at Ocala on Thursday, Volusia on Friday, and the stadium on Saturday and Sunday. It was The Shower of Stars series. That series even ran at Hialea.
