  • How Cold?

The Weather Channel is saying there is a freeze warning for Volusia County the next couple of nights...I was wondering just how cold its going to be this week.

I'm guessing 42 by race night's end tonight!

Dave Argabright wrote in this month's Sprint Car and Midget Magazine that 40degrees in Florida during Speedweeks is a lot colder than people think.

The coldest I've ever been at a race was at Volusia around '79-80... Had to have been in the mid 20's... Was standing at the entrance to turn one (sitting down you would freeze)... There was a metal drum there that was used for trash and people were putting anything they could find in it that would burn... Eventually a couple of guys went into the turn one restroom and TORE DOWN THE STALLS!!! Put the wood in the can and we had a nice warm fire... They even tossed in the toilet seats!!! NO JOKE... IT WAS COLD!!!
If the weatherman says it's 32 degrees, it's 22 at Volusia...

Dave your story reminded me of the cold night up at St. Augustine for the WoO show back around 94. I remember Casey Luna's wife inviting my brother and me into the trailer for some hot chocolate. Ofcourse Blaney was nowhere to be found...Man was it cold. We still joke about it.

Local Orlando weather says Thursday morning will be 25 degrees....

I remember one year at New Smyrna, maybe late '80s - early '90s they had to cancel the features because the fog had rolled in and scorers couldn't even see pit road...LOLOLOL...it was like 19 degrees or something; I had on two pairs of pants, two pairs of socks, some longjohns, two t-shirts, a sweatshirt, and my winter coat and was still freezin' my a$$ off....LOLOLOL

It wouldn't be speedweeks if at least for a few days it is not freezing cold or raining. Poor Northern folks are not use to our cold and usually feel colder here than at home. But it is just February in Florida.

metal grandstands don't help anything in the cold.maybe a heating element of some sort could be installed, not gonna bet on it though.

...then Daytona and Francois' (Uncle Brian) need to get it in their head that they didn't need to move the Busch Clash (excuuuuuse me...Budweiser ShootOut - that's already ruined) to Saturday night, the second night of the World Series and Volusia; and the Truck race moved to Friday night, the night of the Richie Evans Memorial at New Smyrna. There was nothing wrong with those races being run during the day, so the fans could go to the short track shows in the evening. We used to get up to Daytona on Friday afternoon and go to the Circle Track Track Trade Show on Friday afternoon, go to New Smyrna on Friday night, Daytona Busch race Saturday, Volusia Saturday night, and get home in time to watch the 500 on TV Sunday. Now, that's impossible with Daytona's schedule if you wanna see the Truck race on Friday.

I think Daytona or the France family could care less about the rest of Speedweeks racing. They're not the ones being hurt by the changes, they are benefiting. As John said, TV.
