  • Need your help.....

    On the tread: PHOTOS BY NUMBERS, on page 2, there is a white Modified with a 4 cylinders motor in it, seems to be No 23,

    What class is this car? Where do they race? Are they built by a company or home made?

    Thanks

    Andre,
    I believe that is an Outlaw Modified Mini. I saw them last night at Citrus for the first time. I believe it's a traveling series. They didn't have many cars but I think they could be a great show with more cars. They were fun to watch last night and they did pass. I don't know anything else about them.

      Hey Andre

      I put that picture up Andre, from Desoto and it is indeed the Outlaw Modified.
      I think there is someone fabricating them although some appear to be home built. The #15 wing put up is in fact their 2008 Champion, Doug hooper. They are indeed a traveling series and I don't think they have a home track. If you want some information about them I have several of their phone numbers. I have sold them numerous videos over the years. In fact that #23 on page 2 is Cliff steinman and his dad has bought video every time he has been at a track I have been shooting at. The are a very compeitive class of cars. I would imagine fun to drive. I have bunches of pictures of them if you'd like to see different styles. Bob...

          It's Doug Hopper and I believe he started racing at Sunshine Speedway in mini stocks.

            The class has a long history here in Fla.,I started it many years ago,but turned it over to others after a few years,here's the site now;
            http://www.outlawmodified.com/

            i did this below note some time ago,when ask about the class history;p

            As The father of Outlaw Modifieds as it is known as now,I been ask before about some info. I made the rules and ran the group too let low dollar races go fast,knowing full well that for good car counts we need things to be fun and not over costly,
            plus the fastist class of cars at any track has the most respect. To do that they must also look good,go fast and have great close racing in good car count feilds.
            There is a lot more detail I could add,but this may be enough for most
            about History of 4cyl open wheel Outlaw Modifieds of Florida.
            If you think you need more let me know,or any thing that is not clear
            too? I write stuff that make scents to me,but I already knew what I was trying to say.
            I started it in 1987 and had turned it all over to Craig Sherar by 1991 ,and George Sands took a hand in pushing for high car counts,his hard work payed off.
            Below is a write up out line;

            "Were We Came From"

            The history of Outlaw Modifieds Of Florida is tied to Speedweeks and Hialeah Speedway.
            Feb. Speed Weeks at New Smyrna in 1987 saw the creation of the basic rules for what is now 4 Cyl open wheel" Outlaw Modifieds " in 2007 as I'm writing this.
            This all started with long time 4 Cyl racers,Dana Barlow consulting with Tony LaPorta and Dan Meservey over a set of rules Dana had drawn up with help from Dan and Tony for a more economy oriented open wheel modified car for Florida to use and still be able to compete with the some what over cost modified cars out of New England by that time.
            Kenny Kincade and Dana Barlow put the first of these new class cars together for it to grew from.
            This came about from many years of racing modified four Cly's in both Florida and new England. The new class was first named "Super Fours",but Dan ask if it could be changed to "Pro Four of Florida" so we could tie together the East cost and all meet each year at Speedweeks in Feb for what would be like a USA Championship Week of racing of open wheel only,and so Pro-4 of Fla. it became . For a few years before this,we had all been kind of doing a run what ya bring of 4 cyl racers,Speedweeks of four Cyl's originally having started from when Dana was racing IMSA I-100 [Formula Ford] asking John Bishop about running mod mini's in Feb., and John in turn telling the then promoter of Holland Speedway in NY about the interest of a lager group of 4 Cyl mod racers.
            Resulting in a add in Speed Sport News and ranting the 1/4m dirt(road moral) track around the foot ball field at Daytona's Jr. Collage got it going,after two years there the show by Racer & promoter Fred Cartwright was moved to VCS and after that by Dan to NSS for a few years,then to Ocala Speedway by Paul Petrie .

            Origin of this kind of 4Cly racing ;
            Small used 4 clyinder cars had become cheep and EZ to get by the mid to late 1960's,making them a target for inexpensive fun class of cars to race at any place that had space,oval tracks or even open fields. The timing was right ,so these fast little cars started showing up as a new fun low buck racing class all over the US and Can. at about the same,it would be wrong to say any one place invented them first!
            In Florida and up north these 4Cly races start as nearly stock and over the years became more modified each year,but buy the late 1970's the big gas shortage killed off the supply of used small cars cheep parts and rule mods had nearly put the cost to high also,plus travel to the race tracks,that also killed off most racing at that time.
            Mid 1980's 4 Cly racing saw some rebirth,starting again with low dollar near stock,then was rabidly moving to full modified and high cost,running the risk of over pricing it self out of racing another time,by 1987 something needed to be done with what we had learned from the past.
            The timing was right! as anyone can see we're still racing this class in 2007.

            Hope some enjoy it,
            Dana
