  • Old Raceways--Read-On--

The economics of local short track stock car racing is not kind to old raceways. In the past we had concession stands, ticket sales and rainchecks. Today, it seems we have revenue streams, luxury skyboxes, and software. For many, old raceways represent simpler times and a more festive atmosphere; they also serve as a direct link to the past, bridges to childhood memories of a time spent as a child with parents and loved ones.

No wonder, than, that an old raceway can stir some powerful memories. In an ever-changing world, an old raceway is an island of stability and tranquility. There are few places that are the same as they were 20, 35, or 50 years ago. Your grandfathers raceway is same as your dad's raceway. Owners and promoters come and go. But sadly, it's not your raceway if it's torn down to make way for a Best Buy or Home Depot.

Keep in mind folks, not every single old tired raceway is worth saving. There will be few tears shed when some old raceways are plowed under due to urban sprawl, among other things. However, many new raceways are still being constructed as we speak now.

Times change, and interest change in all of us. This lovable sport, and the homes/raceways for it are still going to be around for a long, long while.

I know the PRI folks made a pitch to the Disney people to use the speedway for a USAC, or USAC-style race next year. Havent heard yet what the response was...
