  • Paying it Forward

What was your random act of kindness in 2008?? Did you pay it forward if you were shown kindness in your life??

I have 3 homeless people who live close to my house in the woods, one lady and two gentlemen. You see them gathering cans wherever they can in my neighborhood and staying under the roof of a car wash when it rains really bad. They live in a wooded area that was a trailer park because they were forced out of under the bridges where they did stay dry but the cops would not let them stay. The lady looks to be in her late 50's and the gentlemen older than that. They are polite, never ask for money, and always say hello when spoken to.

Mom and I gathered old pots and pans, an old camp stove and some propane, a few blankets that were old but in good shape and gave them to them on Christmas plus a few things to eat besides supplying them with Christmas dinner and a pie. The smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile because normally they said, no one gives them the time of day. They are nice people and once had homes and families but just fell on bad luck and now find themselves homeless. Do they like being homeless, I am not sure, but they are still part of the human race and need to be treated that way.

I promised the lady that on New Year's Day, I would bring her blackeyed peas, collards, and cornbread, the traditional Southern food for New Year's Day. I also told her that when I cooked the blackeyed peas, a silver dollar will be cooked in them for luck in the new year. Right now I don't have much at all but if we cannot help each other even when we are down, then why did God put us on this earth. I also have leftover yarn from scarfs I made for Christmas and will make each one of them a scarf when the weather does turn cold and it will keep their necks warm and cozy on those nights.

People were kind to me at Christmas and in return for their kindness, I paid it forward to others. That is what makes this world a better place, to pay it forward. And in all truth, I know these 3 new friends will also pay it forward whether it be sharing their goods with another homeless person or helping someone when they can.

So my hope for 2009 for everyone, rich or poor, homeless or not, that we pay it forward for all the kindness given in our lives. It really is not hard to do and the results are unspeakable joy in the heart knowing that we made a difference in someone's life.

Happy New Year everyone and make 2009 a joyous year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Jane...

sometimes i get upset with you because your posts are so depressing .... seems like all you think about is doom and gloom...i guess its ok because we all need comfort...we all need friends to help us thru the tough times... it sure beats the hell out of drugs or suicide. sometimes it only takes some kind words to help us sort things out.
BUT! you have a good heart. you are a kind person and this post shows how good you really are.
i know you devote most of your life to racing and i know why because ive done the same thing. im in it because there are so many wonderful people we meet along the way... an extended family. not to mention the excitement!!!
Jane what you did for these homeless people is what Christianity and good will is really about. we need to take better care of those who are less fortunate than ourselves. personally in America i dont understand why we have so many homeless... our govt. lent billions out and not to the people in America that need a little boost .... maybe the new govt. leaders will make things better. time will tell.
i will keep you and your friends in the woods in my prayers. i hope 2009 brings you all some kind of happiness and warm dry homes... thank you for showing us the best side of you jane. you are a good woman and im glad we are friends. i hope things are much better for you and your loved ones in 2009 !!!
    God bless...

Thanks Carol, I do believe in paying it forward. It is the best part of life, that we can do that. I also hope the Government helps those who really need help because being homeless is not much fun especially when most people look at the homeless as dirty, smelly people and not the real person they are.

I once knew a homeless man for about 2 years who did live under the bridge in Cocoa Beach. He had been an engineer and lost everything including his family. They acted like he did not exsist anymore but he would have given you the shirt off his back and always made enough catfish stew for everyone. He lived mostly off what he would catch from the bridge and potatoes and stuff he got out of the Winn Dixie dumpster down the street. He would work at the port doing odd jobs whenever he could and he was not a drunk like most people think homeless people are. He drank coffee all the time. He was a good man. Then when they ran everyone out from under the bridges, I could never find him again so I don't know what happened to him.
But I was proud to call him friend.

This year has been gloom and doom but it is almost 2009 and I look forward to it. I have high hopes of a better day for all of us and Michael coming home hopefully towards the end of the year from Iraq.

So Happy New Year Carol and see ya sometime, somewhere in 2009.
