  • Lost City of Atlantis--Looper Speedway

Lake Lanier near Atlanta, Ga. was dammed up in the late 50's, all to provide drinking water for the area.
Now that it has been drained down from the recent drought conditions, an entire Town has that was once flooded underneath depths of the reservoir water since the late 50's has seemingly emerged, including a once active 1/4 mile dirt track built by Bud Looper.

Seems it was NASCAR Sanctioned, however, the big series never raced there. Lee Petty, the Flock brothers, and a host of others had driven there.

The concrete Grandstands have emerged, and so have engines, crankshafts, and pistons, even parts of the guardrail retaining wall.
An entire town was once underneath, now even a Church Steeple has shown up, a small jail cell, and some small shops.

Somewhat like Atlantis, but near Atlanta instead, and that's kinda' cool, as it seems mostly down here that Old Lost Raceways are underneath housing developments or shopping centers, not underneath dammed-up Lakes.

Right on! Lets go racing -under an old fallen Raceway, wouldn't that be cool to fire up a Speedway from the 50's.
And yes, I did, however retreive the ol' charcoal grille, and thanks for asking. Hope to see you and the Mrs. again soon.
      Rog.

Ummm..I raced against a local hot shoe named Charley Mincey at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA, back in the 70's.

Wonder if the guy that appears in the photo in the bottom link above is related?
