How many grew up in the country? I Have some fond memories of those days.
I lived with my papaw and mamaw in my first years. I slept in a tick bed. with my uncle. You talking about fun. I was little and guess who ended up in the holler? If you never slept in a tick bed you probably won't know what the holler is. Somebody explain. They raised 5 kids and only had 2 bedrooms. The girls slept in their room and the boys had their own. It was cramped but man was it a good life. Get up every morning and go on the front porch and watch Deer come out of the trees and feed. Not just 1 or 2, but bunches of them. I never knew any thing about deer season. We took 1 when we were out of deer meat. The good life. Bob....

I'm right with ya there Bob.

I'm giving my old age away now but in my experience, if you were sleeping in a Tick Bed, you were sleeping on a mattress filled with hay, corn shuckings or some other organic material found on the farm. A feather mattress was strictly for the up-town folks.

Also, due to the nature of the material, it usually sunk down to the springs or whatever it was laying on for support, hence leaving a hole referred to as a "holler".

My fondest memory of growing up in those days however was the rain on the tin roof at night. Talk about a relaxing natural sound that would put me to sleep in a heartbeat. (It sure beat the heck out of the OTC sleep aid I use now!)

    Tks for the memories Bob,

    Jim F.

      10-4 on tin

Hey Jim, you are right about the relaxing effect of a tin roof. I'd have 1 now except it cost so much more than shingles. It used to be the opposite. I guess the metal is better now. I just got home from CCMP. We had 100 lap
Limited race. It was pretty good. Did you ever know Joe Winchel? He won it from Flag to flag, Kevin Macey was on his tail all the way. He got up beside him a couple of times. They ran a clean race. You'll have to come down with me some time. Jim Kelly was down. He was over at my place this afternoon and I told he should go with me, but he said he was gona watch TV. I was down there about an hour and I turned around and there was Jim. He obviously changed his mind. Yeah man growin up on a farm was a hoot. As kids we didn't come in till they called us for bed. We seemed to always be able to find things to do. Now days kids are glued in front of a TV or video games. Man I gotta get a shower and go dump my picture from tonight. See ya later Jim. Bob.....

No, don't recall knowing Joe. You've mentioned Jim Kelly to me here on the board a few times. Is that the same Jim Kelly that used to work the pits, etc. at Sunshine Speedway? If it is, been knowing him for a long time but lost touch some time ago. Last I knew (if we're talkin about the same guy) that Jim K. lived up Brooksville way.

I heard that! My buddies and I did manage to get into trouble though from time to time. Like running ahead of the combine on the farm next door, then falling down, faking that we were hurt so the farmer would have to stop the machine and get off to check, then we'd jump up and take off again! (I remember my dad only getting his belt out a few times for my antics and that was one of them!)

We also used to get into another farmer's cider vat where he made maple syrup. Used to drink that stuff until we got a stomach ache.

        Aahhh...the good ole days...

Mornin Jim. I don't think its the same guy. The Jim K I'm talkin about raced at Sunshine and the Gate, and Saramana, but I don't remember him working the pits. He grew up in manatee, palmetto, elenington area. He moved to MO for about 4 years.
I didn't get in a lot of trouble, unless you wanta call pushing my Aunt out of the corn crib, or moving the out house, or stealing watermelon trouble. I think the worse whippping I got was when I missed the School bus and walked across the mountain with my buddys. I scared the doo outa my Mamaw. The bus came and I wasn't on it. That ment a trip to the cistern.
I'll see ya later man I gotta get ready for church. Bob......
