Good show last night with the ASCS Sprint cars. 33 cars in the pits, lots of high quality teams, and a cleanly run program. Here's a few observations from that show:
Sport Allen looked very good in winning the race, in a car I hadn't seen before.
Kenny Adams lost a front wing in an early race pile-up, when he appeared to lose the handle in turn 1, and others piled in. After that, Kenny just couldn't move forward much, which showed me just how critical that front wing is. If Kenny can't overcome that disadvantage, NOBODY else could either.
Terry Gray must really be hating East Bay these days. Back in January for the King of the 360's event, I believe he flipped twice in 3 days. He flipped AGAIN last night.
Matt Tiffany doesn't get enough credit... that kid can flat-out wheel a Sprint car.
Like him or not (I don't), Gene Lasker can drive the wheels off a Sprint car when he can keep control of his temper. Last night, he was a wild-man to watch. He won the Limited Sprint feature, his heat in the 360's and a 3rd in the A-Main.
Never seen, or even heard of Gavin Thomas before, but keep your eyes and ears open for that name next year. He was very impressive for a relative unknown.
Good to see Red Stauffer out there again. He looked pretty rusty, but I'm sure after 25 years in a Sprint car he didn't completely forget how to drive one.
This was the first time I've ever been impressed by RJ Johnson. A perenial back-of-the-packer, he ran hard, clean, and pulled out a top 5 finish. Nice job kid!
Listening to the announcing team made me realize just how good Joe Linebarier really is, and Volusia is lucky to have him. The electricty in the air that was apparent last week, just wasn't there this week.
That damn place needs to get some Budweiser products in there. Icehouse beer just doesn't cut it.
There was "supposed" to be a Vintage car race, but apparently nobody was told about it. Only 3 cars showed up, even though at least 10 DAARA club members at the Zephyrhills event told ME about it. It was NOT DAARA sanctioned, which explains a lot. That club WILL bring cars when invited to your local speedway.
The East Bay Mini-Stocks are probably the best 4-Cylinder class in the state. Usually those classes pretty much bore me, but 2 weeks in a row, both heats and features were competitive all the way through the field.
On the flip side, the Street Stocks can't go 2 laps without a caution. Once again, the time clock stopped the feature, rather than completing all the laps. The feature was won by a driver with one of the coolest racing names... "Buck Skinner". To keep with the theme, he even has the car painted in camoflage!
After not visiting EB since January, I've now been there twice in a row... and wondering why I don't go there a whole lot more often!
