mind you, he did try a good pass, but once blocked he should have pulled back in line and tried it again...
i absolutely cannot agree with this.
as the leader, Tony has an undisputed right to choose his line. once he's chosen his line it's up to every body else to get around him on the remaining track. Tony swerved out of his line twice.
Tony deserved the grass. if you watched Wind Tunnel Sunday night, Jeff Gordon even made reference to this. he claimed that several times he's gone down to the yellow and stopped going left. then he just lets the guy in front pivot off of his nose and spin through the grass. because that's the way NASCAR enforces their rule book.
not that i've got anything against Tony, he was doing what leaders 'do' at Dega and Daytona. Earnhardt swerving all over the place trying to block Marlin is what got him killed. it happens in every plate race. but that doesn't make it 'right'.
Given his situation, my pedal would have been doing the same thing...
your second answer is more what i would expect.
my opinion is that Smith actually waited way too long to make his move. there were 5 cars in that lead pack and 3 of them where from the DEI stable. at worst, Tony could have gotten David Ragan to hook up with him. the other two DEI cars were going to follow Smith no matter what happened. a 3 car draft ought to beat a 2 car draft most any day.
