  • Oct. 4 - CCMP in Punta Gorda - Over $800 in Cash/Prizes - Desoto Champ Kart Series

Dark skies hovered over the low-banked 3/8 mile paved oval of Charlotte County Motorsports Park in Punta Gorda, FL last night, and rain interrupted the activities several times. However, the track was able to get the races in, and when the feature ended and the top three finishers stopped their karts on the frontstretch to get interviewed by the track announcer, one driver had won his series-leading fourth feature of 2008 with the Desoto Champ Kart Series!

Fourteen champ karts came to Punta Gorda to take their shot at winning the race sponsored by:

    2008 Series Primary Sponsors:
    VEGA Tires from http://www.TSRacing.com,
    GECKER Motorsports at http://www.Geckermotorsports.com,
C&D Motorsports and Hurricane Speedway at http://www.hurricanekartinginc.com,
Cutting Edge Kart Shop at http://www.cuttingedgekartshop.com
COMPETITION Karting, Inc. in Welcome, NC

    2008 Series Race Sponsors:
    VP-Motorsports at http://www.VP-Motorsports.com,
    HEAT RACING of Brandon, Florida,
    J. Hite Exterminating at http://www.hiteexterminating.com
PBS Sales and Service of Tampa at http://www.pbssalesandservice.com
    5 STAR MOTORSPORTS at http://www.5starmotorsports.net

Two six-lap heat races were held, with the odd pill draws running in the first heat, and the even pills in the second. The HEAT RACING HEAT RACES were sponsored by HEAT RACING, located in Brandon, Florida. Please thank Robin and Gary Green for their support of the Desoto Champ Kart Series, the next time you place an order with HEAT RACING!

Each heat awarded a $25 HEAT RACING store coupon for first, with $15 for second and $10 for third, for a total payout of $100 in store coupons!

In the first heat race, PJ Letourneau brought the crowd to it's feet as he scored the upset win, with Alan McKinney finishing second and CCMP Stock Lite points leader Mike Burns claiming third.

The second heat was won by Brian Scherrer (after starting last!), followed closely by JD Cordon, with Paul Letourneau nabbing the third place prize.

The feature rolled out onto the track at approximately 7:30pm. Although the threatening skies appeared to have kept some race fans away, a sizable (and noisy!) contingent of champ kart family and crew could be seen standing and cheering as the field circled the track for it's pace laps! Brian Scherrer was clearly a crowd favorite, as a group of his friends and family came to the track to cheer him on.

When the green flag flew, JD Cordon quickly moved to the point, followed by Alan McKinney in second.

Several cautions flew throughout the race, mostly for spins. Each time, the track took a few extra laps to make sure the running order was correct. Once again, fuel mileage would play a huge factor in the final outcome. By the time the checkered flag flew, the champ karts had logged 51 laps around the 3/8 mile track!

When the final green flag flew on lap 19, a gasp went up from the crowd as leader JD Cordon started to slow coming off of turn two....he was starting to run out of fuel!

As this was happening, Brian Scherrer slipped under Alan McKinney for the lead with Phil Harp moving to second, as several karts got bunched up going into turn three.

Tim Simmons, whose truck had broken down on the way to the track, causing him (and Mitchell Stevens) to miss the heat races, was moving up fast, after starting last in the feature.

When the white flag was given, several karts started to sputter, as Alan McKinney started to slow, followed by Scott Hailey.

Brian Scherrer crossed the line first, followed closely by Phil Harp in second, with Tim Simmons finishing third.

Congratulations to Brian Scherrer on his accomplishment!! IN ADDITION to the feature winners trophy and cash payout of $190, Brian also collected a free clutch rebuild from Chase Fitzgerald of Cutting Edge Kart Shop at http://cuttingedgekartshop.com!

Phil Harp collected $150 in cash (and a trophy) for second, while Tim Simmons took home $90 in cash (and a trophy) for third. Thanks to the turnout of drivers and crew, and the support of our sponsors, the series paid out over $800 in cash and prizes to the TOP NINE finishers in the feature, and the top three heat race finishers in both heats! (Eleven of the fourteen drivers won either cash or prizes last night!)

After the top five finishers had cleared the scales, the winner was told to take his kart into the tech area. Four cards were shuffled and placed on a table (upside down). These cards contained the numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5. Brian Scherrer was asked to pick two of the cards. He turned over the 3 and 4 cards, so these two finishers (third and fourth) were invited to join Brian's kart in the tech area.

The following items were selected for tech last night:
    1) Piston Size
    2) Valve Size
    3) Pop-Up of Piston measured
    4) Cam - A dial indicator was placed on top of the valve (while the head was off), for a Running Cam Profile Lift check, and for an EZ-Spin check
    5) Carb - No-go guage through the air filter hole

    These three karts cleared tech!

If you've ever wanted to race in front of cheering fans, be interviewed by the track announcer after the feature, race for cash in EVERY race, and watch some of Florida's best car racing after the champ kart feature is completed (at no additional cost), please consider trying a race with the Desoto Champ Kart Series! Everyone is welcome to participate in this unique karting experience.

    Official Finishing Order:

    1) Brian Scherrer http://hurricanekartinginc.com

And after the feature, Tina Scopano and Mrs. Paul Letourneau laid out a huge spread of food for all the racers and crew. A large crowd quickly gathered in the PBS Racing team pits, to enjoy the chicken and dumplings, salad, and bread!!! Thanks to the Scopanos and Letourneaus for their hospitality.

And after the feature had concluded, a cheer went up as it was announced that Nine-time WKA National Shifter Kart Champion (and DCKS racer) Chad Dokken had claimed two more National Wins on Saturday in Savannah, Georgia, at the WKA Dunlop Road Racing Series (Shifter Karts and Tag Karts)!

Thanks also to everyone for coming out last night! Even with threatening skies for most of the afternoon and evening, everyone seemed to have a good time.
