I just went through the same thing so I know what you mean. If you are willing to spend some time trying different genealogy sites you may have some luck. I was lucky and found a family site that had done most of the work for me. I started by going to http://www.hotsheet.com/ and scrolling down to the research section to find some genealogy links. I know this isn't much help. Maybe someone else can come up with something better. Good luck.

      hey Carol

One thing you might want to try is going to the newspaper in the town that they passed away in. also, you may also try the funeral home that they were inteerred... one other thing check the town they were from. they used to also place obits in their hometown papers as well. did you try googling them.

Carol. Google his exact and whole name. I did it with my father a few years ago and found what I needed.

              Hey Carol...

Hey Carol.... According to the Social Security Death Index... Yes there is such a thing.... There was a Dorothy Paturas that was born in 1912 and passed away April 1, 1973... Right below him in the search was George... You may want to try and research it through this way... I hope this helps... I looked this up through the NY Times Obit section which sends you to another search area....

                Dorothy.....

those dates are about right. you are the first one to find her name at all..
                ;-) gettin closer...
thank you all so much... i cant believe i forgot her name. i really liked and respected her. i was in a home (age 10) and at Christmas she was the only person who remembered me. she bought me a little sewing basket and made me promise not to tell anyone. i will never forget her act of kindness. JUST HER DA#* name! lol
as for graves. well back then nothing was computerized. they kept index files. several were lost or destroyed from Woodlawn Cemetary... they only give you 265 names... and NONE were hers or my fathers. its as tho they never existed... dorothy may not have even been buried with him or she could have even had him moved to her plot. my aunt and cousins are the only ones left and none of them remember her name before she married george. this is a real challenge. wonder what i will do when i find out...hahahaha

I will see what I can do... There used to be a feature on the Social Security site to check for when people were Married as well... Have to check it up... By any chance did you try finding out where they were married and check with them or that State...

I think George Henry Paturas married Joan DeWitt around 1948. They had 7 children before he died. I believe Joan lives in Mt. Vernon, New York with some of her children on Fleetwood Avenue. I believe your grandfather was married to Dorothy. George Henry was a N.Y. City firefighter. I believe that after your father died Joan married a Moriarty.
