  • Its all in the organization

I know; we are supposed to discuss Florida racing. However there is an example here that could benefit our fine local tracks.

I went to the USAC sprint show at Kokomo this week. It was part of USAC's Indiana Sprint Week, an 8 race series across 7 local dirt tracks. Since it was also part of a national tour, there were cars from across the country, and many driven by the biggest names in the sport!

Kokomo Speedway is a historic 1/4 dirt track in a small farming and manufacturing town. The type of track that is drying up in many locations, but this one appears to be thriving. It is not that the place is new and shiny; in fact most of the facility is pretty run dpwn. The main grandstand faces into the setting sun; a real problem for fans, but the track responded by erecting a tall, safe aluminum stand on the backstraight. A good move indeed.

Here is what the track did really well. They had a one class show with 47 cars, started on time, held it in front of full stands, and were done in 3 hours. The accident clean-ups were VERY quick, the restarts were no nonsense and also very quick. They used expertise, time and plenty of water to produce an excellent racing surface, despite the weather that was very hot and sunny. Best of all, they presented a show that the fans wanted to see. Wingless sprints on dirt are amazing!

So what is the example? Organization trumps fancy facilities. Fans will still turn out for an interesting show that is well run. I bet every one of those fans (and competitors) would not hesitate to return to Kokomo Speedway.

    Organize....organize....organize!

USAC is a top notch organization

Bill France learned how to found NASCAR by going to AAA and USAC events. So did John Marcum and Earl Baltes who owned Eldora.I know it's hard for the Southern stock car fans to accept but AAA then USAC had the tracks, the drivers and the notoriety that Bill France sought.But....the Midwestern winters are tough on outdoor facilities. And too many track owners neglected their facilities back in their heyday and let them get to the point where they are a hard sell if they are forced to close their gates. This season is going to be a backbreaker for a lot of tracks.I question the use of only one track wrecker at various tracks here in Florida. It makes clean up take forever which is a true joy while you are baking in the Florida sun.I had never been to a track that only used one wrecker before I came to Florida. It didn't make sense to me then and a dozen years later still doesn't.Ive never been to any of the tracks in Indiana but Ohio has many in the same position. They are still thriving because they are out in the middle of farm country. The tracks closer to the bigger cities continue to struggle more than thrive. But if you keep ignoring upkeep eventually the USAC's of the world quit scheduling you.

Lost in the deal tails, but key things are for sure well run show,,promotor/letting the fans know to get them there, a good show* gets fans back and part of the show is not just racing, but did the fan have a all around good time, food, seating, clean rest room, good PA,good program. So locastion can also make or brake.
For me,I really do love short track=an that to me is 1/4 mile up to 1/3 mile.
As much as I like 1/2 mile,it's much harder to run 1/2 as a weekly show, takes more cost at every point, upkeep, lights, race cars takes more to look like a race an if crash happens on 1/2,mostly kills the car vs smaller track it can be fixed for next week.

I would suggest that some of the officiatin' is in the name of the officiatin'.

That is, it has a self perpetuating life of it's own. And like the virus, it wants to live. A long time.

And the racing? It is a medium to support the officiatin'.

How to fix that? I dunno.

But if you want short cautions and a quickly run off show in central Florida, Showtime is the place.

I try to give USAC kudos for a good show, so naturally they follow it up with a bad call! On Wednesday night at Terre Haute, a useless, last-lap caution changed the outcome, so I guess they are far from perfect, but are trying.
